JOB DUTIES: Perform technical work in the operation of a water treatment plant, and related work as required. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Lead Operator.

• Make regular tour of plant and checks engines, generators, pumps, aerators, mixing basins, settling basins, digesters, filters, clarifiers, and other equipment for proper functioning. Make routine physical and chemical tests, recording results.
• Collect water/wastewater samples from designated points.
• Conduct operation of computerized Supervisory Control and Data Acquisitions system (SCADA).
• Monitor proper functioning of pumps, motors, chlorinators, filters, and chemical feeders making adjustments as necessary to maintain proper flow; records readings of meters and indicators.
• Make adjustments and notify superiors of need for repair.
• Regulate and adjust motors, pumps, blowers, valves, and other apparatus to meet changing operating conditions.
• Change charts on recording meters and gauges.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Minimum education: High school Diploma or equivalent required.
• Ability to complete training and obtain a NC Grade I Biological Wastewater Operator certification within eighteen months of hire. Complete NIMS 700 training within twelve months
• Must work on shift rotation. Must be able to occasionally work weekends or weekdays and day or night shifts.

Other preferred skills also include:

Some knowledge of the principles, practices, equipment, and methods used in water/wastewater treatment

Some knowledge of the occupational hazards of the work and of necessary safety precautions

Some knowledge of biology and chemistry as related to the specific treatment process

Ability to adjust pumps, chemical feed machines and other plant equipment; ability to check the operation of equipment and to detect defects in operation; ability to take accurate readings, to keep routine records and to make mathematical computations

Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing

Ability to maintain effective working relationships with others.
