Boeing Defense Space and Security (BDS) is seeking motivated and dedicated System Safety Engineers to join our Phantom Works team in either Berkeley or Hazelwood, MO.

The Phantom Works division applies sophisticated technologies to rapidly develop pre-production prototypes. We are looking for dedicated system engineers to join our team in developing the next generation of Fixed Wing aircraft.

Our team is currently hiring for a broad range of experience levels including; Experienced, Lead and Senior Level Systems Engineers.

The selected candidate will provide the technical guidance and perform critical system safety engineering work. The work will consist of planning, coordinating, and performing detailed System Safety tasks such as system and subsystem hazard analysis, fault tree analysis, and software safety analysis to mitigate potential product safety hazards. The selected candidate will assist with evaluation of customer/operational needs to define system performance requirements, as well as integrating technical parameters to assure compatibility of physical, functional, and program interfaces. In addition to working with System Safety personnel, the individual will work extensively with design, development, and test personnel to impart safety requirements early in the design process. These tasks are accomplished within a collaborative environment with other program teams to assist with and/or plan design, develop, and verify lifecycle balanced system solutions including resolution of multi-functional technical issues.

Position Responsibilities:
  • Apply an interdisciplinary, collaborative approach to plan, design, develop and verify a lifecycle balanced system of systems and system solutions
  • Evaluate customer and /operational needs to define and coordinate systemperformance, requirements, integrate technical parameters and assure compatibility of all physical, functional and program interfaces
  • Perform various analyses to optimize total system of systems and/or system architecture
  • Perform analyses for affordability, safety, reliability, maintainability, testability, human systems integration, survivability, vulnerability, susceptibility, system security, regulatory, certification, product assurance and other specialties quality factors into a preferred configuration to ensure mission success
  • Develop the planning, organization, implementation and monitoring of requirements management processes, tools, risk, issues, opportunity management and technology readiness assessment processes
  • Resolve multi-functional technical issues
This position is expected to be 100% onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.

This position requires the ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance for which the U.S. Government requires U.S. Citizenship. An interim and/or final U.S. Secret Clearance Post - Start is required.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):
  • Bachelor's, Master's or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry
  • 3+ years of engineering experience
Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):
  • 5 or more years related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 10 or more years related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Active U.S. Secret or higher security clearance
  • Experience in System Safety Engineering
  • Military aircrew, maintenance, or operations experience
  • Working knowledge and experience developing/applying aviation related system safety analysis methods such as System Safety Risk Assessments, Fault-tree Analysis (FTA), Functional Hazard Assessment (FHA) and Safety Assessment Report (SAR)
Typical Education & Experience:
Mid-Level (Level 3)


Bachelor's degree and typically 5 or more years' experience in an engineering classification or a Master's degree with typically 3 or more years' experience in an engineering classification or a PhD degree with experience in an engineering classification. Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry. ABET is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

Lead (Level 4)

Bachelor's degree and typically 9 or more years' experience in an engineering classification or a Master's degree with typically 7 or more years' experience in an engineering classification or a PhD degree with typically 4 or more years' experience in an engineering classification. Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry. ABET is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

Senior (Level 5)

Bachelor's degree typically 14 or more years' experience in an engineering classification or a Master's degree with typically 12 or more years' experience in an engineering classification or a PhD degree with typically 9 or more years' experience in an engineering classification. Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry. ABET is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
