Responsibilities
Primary Responsibility:
Lead design concepting team for new and existing facilities, layouts, bidding, and automation applications. Be the focal point for all DC processes and automation design opportunities. Scope facility design options to match new or changing business requirements and provide capital estimates with supplier support. Lead deployment of process and automation simulation for customer demonstrations and internal modeling. Plan and facilitate our Integrated Design process with thorough supplier selection, detailed engineering with the GC and AC, and finalize the operational process documentation. This includes RFP development, specifications, score carding, vendor negotiations/contracts, timeline discussion, functional process review deep, technical layout coordination with all major subs and WCS interface design. Support the sales cycle by developing materials for customer presentations and lead discussions on design features and differentiators during sales calls.
Serve as both the department head and thought leadership executive ; leading team of engineers through development of value added solutions for new business opportunities facilitating deeper engineering projects (up to 75%-85%) to obtain final GMP (guaranteed maximum price). The Sr. Director will review all proposals and provide strong input on designs personally. This role will also provide strategic direction around automation, construction, refrigeration, packaging and forklift/MHE specification.
Essential Functions:
Handle all requests for support on design, sales (related to engineering), simulation and general capabilities discussion
Lead team of 12-14 engineers, designing and engineering sites to accommodate new business and modifications to existing business
Support field and PMO teams in construction, automation and general development of over $600M in projects in progress; serve as engineering support and oversight throughout life of project development up to and even post go-live
Oversee all layouts and cost estimates for accuracy and innovation; ensure costing is appropriate, aggressive and thorough
Review costing benchmarks used and engage vendors to support proposals for capital and timelines
Prepare materials in defense of capital increases; explain commodity fluctuations, exchange rate/currency impact and other labor- or demand-related or market increases with source information and cost indices (i.e. steel)
Lead staff to develop preliminary concepts for projects, budget costs and proposed project schedules
Deliver PowerPoint and other documentation to help "tell the story" of the design, listing the features and benefits of how the design meets the customer's requirements
Prepare materials for business development to explain and "sell" the solution; participate in customer meetings as subject matter expert for engineered automation and processes.
Develop racking designs for storage requirements for various businesses and product type
Direct in-house ACAD efforts to layout facility and provide drawing solutions and/or modifications clearly, in executive-type presentation
Direct in-house simulation efforts to animate solutions, show advantages of automation and potentially identify bottlenecks.
Provide end-to-end solutions support with other departments to include labor/staffing plans (automated and conventional), launch costs and MHE decision reviews
Provide thought leadership around how to use existing facilities or best re-deploy assets
Assist in supplier selection phase in developing detailed RFPs for obtaining competitive bids; analyze bids to determine successful providers.
Lead cross-functional design teams after concept approval; this included detailed engineering with vendors, functional systems review and process documentation
Through this process, define scope and capabilities of WCS, as it integrates with WMS
Develop in-house tools (i.e. racking survey, engineering site directory, cost benchmarks, PDP prep book) to accelerate our internal design process
Develop point of view/white paper documentation (LEED, hydrogen fuel cell, blast technology, etc.) to determine most appropriate designs and solutions for Americold
Work with various general contractors in developing solutions for lighting, fire protection, refrigeration and general construction
Work with regional general managers and facility management to develop layouts, cost estimates and implementation schedules
Support cross-functional teams in solutions development and project qualification (engineering, sales, finance, legal, field maintenance, operations) ...
Keep abreast of the latest technology in building design, automation, controls/WCS, and evaluate for applications for use in Americold facilities to include Automated Guided Vehicles, layer picking and slatting/deslatting opportunities
Work with construction project management team, real estate, and maintenancein assessing buildings for our use/purchase and estimating re-commissioning of closed facilities
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Qualifications & Experience:
Bachelor's degree in Industrial, Mechanical Engineering or similar discipline required
10-15 years' experience in construction, facility layout or mechanical design preferred
Solid computer skills required, primarily with Microsoft Excel and Project software. Knowledge and skills using AutoCAD software is a plus.
Knowledge & Employment Standards:
