Responsibilities

OPPD's Design Engineering Department is seeking a Senior Design Engineer to join their team!

This role is responsible for evaluation, design, project management and construction management of modifications and capital improvements for OPPD electrical generation facilities to assure safe, economical and reliable operation. Works closely with OPPD generation facility staff, other departments within OPPD, outside vendors, and/or contractors to acquire information, resolve problems and implement solutions. Serve as an independent technical and work process resource.

Position specific accountabilities include:
  • Provide professional engineering design services for OPPD electrical generating facilities to assure safe, economical and reliable operation.
  • Understand and model OPPD policies and Leadership Framework principles and practices.
  • Fully competent to research, define, and solve complex, sophisticated design related problems.
  • Develop, evaluate and compare potential solutions for design related problems.
  • Provide technical evaluations, engineering calculations, specifications, drawings, bid evaluations, contracts, installation packages, operating procedures, system descriptions and test procedures for major projects.
  • Perform technical reviews and evaluations of design documents prepared by others in the department or from outside organizations to ensure technical accuracy.
  • Perform design reviews for design documents provided by others in the department or outside organizations to ensure OPPD and governmental policies and regulations are satisfied.
  • Serve as an advisor or consultant on technical issues.
  • Develop and present both internal and external presentations that are logical and influential.
  • Produce reports of high quality and ready for final submission.
  • Possess substantial knowledge of related disciplines.
  • Understand how OPPD interacts with outside regulatory agencies and utility groups.
  • Provide project management services to assure economic, quality and timely completion of multiple assigned projects.
  • Prioritize and schedule work for all assigned projects to ensure timely completion of project milestones.
  • Provide budget information, economic evaluations, business case documentation, and schedule development for assigned projects.
  • Coordinate with Supply Chain Management to initiate and complete purchase of materials necessary for installation of project related systems and/or equipment using OPPD work management systems.
  • Provide regular updates on project progress and input project information into OPPD work management systems.
  • Close out and archive information from completed projects in accordance with OPPD procedures and document retention policies.
  • Provide construction management services to assure quality installation of new systems and/or equipment for OPPD electrical generating facilities.
  • Coordinate with Supply Chain Management to interpret and implement construction contracts.
  • Manage, direct and provide oversight of contractors and construction activities for compliance with contract documents and OPPD policies and procedures for assigned projects.
  • Manage construction schedules, coordinate work with other internal and/or external groups, and report progress for assigned projects.

Qualifications

Required:
  • Four (4) year Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering or other Engineering degree related to power generation (ABET accredited degree)
  • Professional Engineering Registration in the State of Nebraska or means for reciprocity within six (6) months
  • A minimum of five (5) years professional experience in design engineering and project management
  • Ability to perform complex engineering tasks and perform intricate studies
  • Demonstrated awareness of industry changes and advancements
  • Demonstrated industry wide expertise
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated effective analytical, problem solving and decision making abilities
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team, exercise flexibility and take responsibility for assigned work
  • Ability to organize, prioritize and complete multiple projects simultaneously with frequent changing priorities
  • Ability to interact with internal and external customers in a professional and respectful manner
  • Ability to chair a working group or task force
  • Strong negotiating skills
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license

Desired:
  • Engineering related experience at a power generating facility or in a related field
  • Working knowledge of OPPD work processes and computer systems
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification
  • Advanced Degree (MBA or MS - qualifies for up to two (2) years experience)
