Summary of Position (Paragraph form):

The Senior Mechanical Engineer at Vapotherm is responsible for the design and development of the mechanical systems for new durable and disposable products for respiratory therapy, inclusive of system architecture. This individual will establish and document relevant specifications, build and test prototype modules and devices, perform verification and validation testing as part of a medical device design controls environment, and provide input to the manufacturing engineering team regarding design industrialization/validation strategy. This individual will also work closely with peers on the Strategic Initiatives and Marketing teams to help define system architectures that meet or exceed customer needs and leverage newly developed technologies. This individual will stay current with the latest advances in mechanical systems, tools, and technologies in healthcare to be able to define technology roadmaps that underlie our product roadmaps and help ensure that Vapotherm stays at the cutting edge of innovation in respiratory care.

Primary Responsibilities (Bulleted form):

  • Translate marketing requirements into engineering system and module requirements
  • Define the overall mechanical systems architecture for new durable and disposable products
  • Collaborate with a cross-functional team of engineers to generate and develop design concepts
  • Develop mechanical designs, including analyses and tolerance studies to evaluate designs
  • Apply technical competency in very difficult situations for new product development
  • Develop detail design specifications, purchase specifications, and acceptance criteria
  • Design, build, and test prototypes to prove out design concepts
  • Author & execute verification protocols and reports; support design, component and process FMEAs
  • Provide input to the manufacturing engineering team regarding design industrialization/validation strategy
  • Manage projects and coordinate with internal and external partners
  • Drives decisions on patent strategy and technology roadmaps to support business objectives

Position Requirements - Education, Knowledge, Years of Experience, etc. (Bulleted form):

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering required, Master degree preferred
  • Minimum 4 to 6 years of medical device design engineering experience
  • Strong statistical and data analysis skills; proficient with software tools to enable analyses
  • Strong CAD and simulation tools skills
  • Experience with plastics material selection and molding/extrusion processes preferred
  • Excellent communication and writing skills
  • Technical writing experience, such as specifications, protocols, and test reports
  • Experience with MS Office tools
