Wood is seeking a Senior Material Handling (Mechanical) Engineer to join our Mining & Minerals team.Reporting to the Mechanical Department Manager, this position is located at our Saskatoon, SK office. Key Responsibilities
  • Conceptual, preliminary, and final design of bulk material handling systems comprised of belt conveyors, drag conveyors, bucket elevators, crushers, screens, apron feeders, agglomeration facilities, mobile conveying equipment, dust control systems, and various specialty equipment components.
  • Select mechanical material handling equipment that will best meet specific process requirements and conditions.
  • Analyze designs for efficiency of construction, use of materials, functionality, and practicality of design.
  • Maintain an expert understanding of department design standards and guidelines, as well as applicable engineering codes and standards.
  • Solve broad, complex technical problems.
  • Develop design solutions according to project requirements.
  • Manage and direct technical resources.
  • Review project documents prior to issue for scope and presentation, including checking for technical accuracy.
  • Monitor and guide design/drafting tasks on material handling project drawings.
  • Serve as an advisor and mentor to other technical personnel on design processes, engineering methods, and interpretation of codes and standards.
  • Promotion of, and adherence to, the discipline specific procedures and feedback on continuous improvement.
  • Reviewing or preparing data and running design programs such as 'Sidewinder' for conveyor design, and DEM software for transfer points and dust collection systems.
  • Undertaking or supervising the preparation of feasibility studies, reports, scopes of work, contract documents, and design layouts.
  • Support the equipment evaluation and procurement activities during project execution.
  • Responsible to seal all drawings that have been prepared under their direction as required in jurisdiction where professional designation is recognized.
  • Engineering support to installation, construction, and commissioning teams.
  • Review and approve supplier/fabricator shop drawings, and coordinate/interface with equipment suppliers/fabricators as required.
  • Investigate client and/or project management grievances at assigned project to determine facts and recommend a solution.
  • Consult with supervisor and other experts concerning unusual problems and develop and apply advanced techniques and methods as required.
  • Perform the role as a Technical Authority, when appointed.
  • Other engineering duties as directed.


Skills / Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical or mining engineering.
  • Ability to register as a Professional Engineer in the Province of Saskatchewan.
  • A minimum of 10 years of increasing responsibility and experience in the design and construction of bulk material handling and industrial facilities including detailed design and drafting of material handling equipment.
  • Experience selecting mechanical equipment components for bulk material handling systems including drives, bearings, pulleys, shafts, and scales.
  • Experience with conveyor calculation software is required. Proven ability with hand calculations for conveyors and other bulk material handling equipment.
  • Experience with potash, uranium, heavy industrial, mining, metal processing, or similar industrial experience is an asset.
  • Experience with the following software is considered an asset:
    - AutoCAD.
    - SOLIDWORKS.
    - Sidewinder.
    - Microsoft Word.
    - Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience with truck loading and rail loading is an asset.
  • Experience with dust collection and suppression systems is an asset.
  • Experience leading and mentoring drafters, designers, and junior engineers.
  • High degree of accuracy and able to manage multiple details under tight deadlines and pressure.
  • Experience as a Lead Material Handling Engineer in Mineral Mining projects will be an advantage.
  • Ability to discover and recommend solutions to complex technical problems in a subject matter expert capacity.
  • Must possess strong team management and organizational skills as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in Canada without Wood sponsorship at time of application.
