Job Overview
As part of a small, team of hardworking experts, you will be responsible for the functional management of Engine Valve and Mechanism engineers supporting fluid controls and mechanical controls of rocket engine systems. You will share in the team's impact on all aspects of mechanical design and development, supporting engine programs in the development of Valves and Mechanism for new propulsion systems. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your dedicated and detailed attention towards safe and reusable spaceflight.
Responsibilities:
- Provide technical and personnel leadership to Valve and Mechanism Engineers within Blue Engines' Propulsion Engineering Team
- Personal ownership of technical Valve and Mechanism scope in addition to functional management responsibilities
- Lead the development of internal engineering and quality processes to standardize and accelerate the product design and development of engine valve hardware
- Manage engineers who design and develop fluid mechanical controls for propulsion systems
- Collaborate closely with design, analysis, manufacturing, quality, and integration engineers, as well as functional management, to develop and implement requirements
- Coordinate and review production drawing for large complex assemblies systematically, documenting the review to the established requirements
- Lead and coordinate internal and external valve design efforts, including First Article Inspection, mechanical test, and customer-facing updates
- Manage roles, responsibilities, and accountability for each direct report and across the team
- Manage department budgets, staffing levels, and performance evaluations
- 8+ years directly related experience
- Minimum B.S. in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics or related field
- Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
- Experience managing direct reports and projects or programs
- Experience managing an engineering team in a production environment
- Experience in developing and managing to department financial targets
- Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion
- In-depth understanding of mechanical engineering principles
- Understanding of product life cycle management and associated gated reviews
- Experience with the design, fabrication, assembly and test of valves and actuation systems for rocket engine applications
- Experience developing and executing test plans for analysis and qualification of components
- Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum
- Demonstrated experience developing new aerospace processes and refining existing ones
- Demonstrated experience on a flight production program
- Previous roles designing propellant valves and pneumatic valves for rocket engine applications
- Base understanding and knowledge of Avionics electrical hardware and software
- Experience collaborating with electrical engineers and software engineers in the design of mechatronics systems
- Experience with Creo parametric with Windchill PDM
- Experience with Ansys Workbench for stress analysis
- Strong understanding of the use of CFD tools for fluid dynamic analyses (pressure drop, turbulence, cavitation) using difficult fluids (cryogens, supercritical fluids, low mass gaseous fluids, etc.)
