Opportunity
The Sr. Manager - Engineering is responsible for translating marketing product targets into new products to be used by end consumer customers. The manager is responsible for the overall development and execution of engine products according to the new products schedule from initial feasibility, into product launch and carried through with current product support and sustainment once production released. This role encompasses ownership of the New Product Development process for Kohler Engines. The manager engages in base engine design and development pertaining to power, drivability, emissions, NVH characteristics, system performance, calibration and overall engine performance. The manager ensures all product changes are properly managed using shared resources including analytical engineers, applications engineers, CAD design team members, engineering data services and performance development conducted in the test labs. The manager is an integral member of the leadership team and contributes to the strategic product roadmap. The manager is continually aware of competitive products and works to ensure an advantage is maintained. The manager is responsible for ongoing production of existing products, maximizing profitability and net sales. For current production, the manager reviews individual business cases including customer requested changes, cost reductions and design for manufacturing improvements. The manager maintains an overall expense budget for the group. The manager ensures adherence to applicable product compliance requirements including but not limited to the Clean Air Act, California Code of Regulations and California Health and Safety Code.
Specific Responsibilities
Provides leadership to the individual platform groups for all new product development programs within the given engine platform, following the detailed NPD process.
Identifies, validates and implements required current product design changes for all product platforms within Commercial >15 HP and Consumer Ride market segments. These changes may be in support of quality, cost, decisions about supply or plant productivity initiatives, market needs, or regulatory requirements.
Drives commonality of approach to component design and system design, use of standard Engineering tools including DFMEA, Problem solving techniques (Shainin, 8D, Kempner Tregoe),technical & print reviews, analytical analysis, design reviews, DVP&R and following engineering principles.
Collaborates with engineering teams of calibration, controls and electronics and quality improvement teams to implement solutions within each product platform.
Documents and publishes technical specifications for all released Commercial >15 HP and Consumer Ride engines.
Actively participates in cross functional review boards for the commercial product and consumer ride product segments.
Manages department cost center budgets and all independent platform engineering related expenses. Creates reports showing progress toward financial or technical goals as requested.
Skills/Requirements
Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering required. (Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited engineering program & an Advanced degree preferred.)
Ten years' progressive experience in engine design and development with at least two years supervising technical personnel.
