OVERVIEW:
The Senior Civil/Structural Engineer position will be involved in the civil and structural design and engineering of complex standard and non-standard distribution and transmission substations as well as solar, energy storage, and microgrid projects. This position will serve as an advanced level resource and should be able to work both independently and in a team environment. The ideal candidate will have experience in the civil and structural design and construction of substation and renewable projects working with both utility and primary service customers.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Ensure that transmission, distribution, and renewable facilities are designed and engineered to meet customer requirements, industry standards, and safety requirements.
- Prepare civil and structural design plans, specifications, and schedules to ensure the structural integrity of substations and renewable facilities.
- Prepare civil/structural drawings in AutoCAD.
- Prepare engineering bid packages and proposals for construction contracts, equipment/material purchases, and professional services.
- Apply professional engineering stamp to designs, calculations, reports, and drawings.
- Develop project bill of materials (BOM).
- Provide support to field team members during construction of facilities.
- Develop new and improve existing standards, templates, procedures, and guidelines to support continuous improvement within the department in support of the Quality Management System (QMS).
- Perform in-process quality verification checks in accordance with the QMS.
- Review potential new projects and assist with scheduling, budgeting, and scoping.
- Provide direction, consultation, and support for internal and external customers on various projects.
- Mentor, train, and oversee the work of lower-level team members.
- Maintain a current knowledge of industry practices, standards, and procedures of civil/structural design, construction, materials, and equipment through contact with industry peers, professional journals and articles, professional memberships, and contact with suppliers for evaluation of new products.
- Provide leadership to Power team and assist with completing projects on schedule and budget.
- Oversee technical merits of projects from start to finish.
- Manage subcontractors and assist internal team members to ensure successful completion of project.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
The Engineer position will work in the office for the majority of the time, performing field visits as required. The office is an open and collaborative environment where work is performed both independently and with the team. When on-site, work is performed in construction environments including building construction, industrial plants, utility scale PV solar plants, other renewable energy plants and substations 12kV through 230kV. While on-site you will spend significant time working independently, often in fairly remote rural locations, possibly in extreme weather conditions.
REPORTING STRUCTURE:
This position reports directly to the Power Division Director.

DESIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:
- Five (5) years experience in substation civil/structural engineering and/or civil/structural design and construction of renewable, medium, and high voltage power systems.
- ABET accredited BS degree in Civil Engineering is required.
- Registered Civil Professional Engineer (PE) in at least one US state with the ability to obtain PE licenses in other states.
- Knowledge of theory, principles, and practices of civil/structural engineering design for renewable generation, transmission, and distribution facilities.
- Knowledge of surveying methods and techniques and equipment and materials related to the construction of transmission, distribution, and renewable facilities.
- Knowledge of theory, principles, and regulations governing safety and construction of civil/structural systems and facilities
- Experience developing civil/structural drawings in AutoCAD.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering documents, drawings, plans, diagrams, and specifications.
- Knowledge of construction codes and applicable safety standards including: IEEE, ANSI, utility, and local codes and standards.
- Skill to evaluate and resolve complex technical issues, monitor and manage projects, and establish and maintain working relationships both internally and externally.
- Experience on renewable energy projects.
- Occasionally required to sit for long and short periods of time.
- Regularly required to talk in order to communicate detailed, important, and accurate instructions to internal and external customers.
