Sandia National Laboratories, and specifically the Stockpile Management team, is responsible for nuclear weapon systems over their entire lifecycle, from original design and production through final dismantlement and disposal. Throughout this lifecycle, we ensure the U.S. nuclear stockpile remains safe, secure, and reliable, and can fully support our nation's deterrence policy.
To support this critical mission, we are seeking an Early/Mid-Career Electrical Engineer to support design, development, testing, and production critical to the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile. Nuclear weapons must survive extremely complex and often harsh environments, and therefore the technical requirements and testing procedures are extremely rigorous. These highly complex technical challenges require a multi-disciplinary approach of systems engineering supported by deep science. You would have access to some of the most premier testing facilities in the world, to include state-of-the art mechanical, electrical, and radiation facilities to ensure the environmental performance requirements are met over the system's entire lifecycle. This position also includes partnering closely with our Navy, Air Force, and National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) customers to ensure a successful integration of Department of Energy (DOE) weapon systems into Department of Defense (DOD) assets.
On a given day you may be called on to do the following (successful applicants will be mentored by experienced engineers to further expertise in):
Lead interdisciplinary teams in solving high-profile technical challenges
Lead test planning activities, coordinate with test facilities, and execute complex system level environmental and functional tests
Perform electrical design, troubleshooting, and anomaly resolution
Analyze test data and system performance against design requirements
Brief management, DOE, and DOD customers on the status of current programs
This position may require you to travel occasionally
Qualifications We Require
Bachelor's degree in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) discipline.
Equivalent experience in lieu of degree must be directly related experience that demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of the job.
Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q security clearance
This position may require you to travel occasionally
Qualifications We Desire
Bachelors and advanced degree in Electrical Engineering
Experience using SOLIDWORKS and MATLAB
Knowledge and understanding of Nuclear Weapon Systems
Self-motivated, positive individual comfortable working in a fast-paced environment
Active DOE Q/L or DOD TS/S clearance
Experience leading multidisciplinary teams through complex technical challenges
Experience working with National Nuclear Security Administration, DoD customers, Los Alamos National Laboratory, DoD contractors, as well as the Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC), and Pantex.
Familiarity with Nuclear Weapon Complex drawing and authorization system, product development and qualification, testing and evaluation, and modeling and simulation.
Experience with test instrumentation and methods
Experience writing test plans and defining test objectives
Familiarity with environmental test facilities (i.e. Lightning, Nuclear Reactors and Pulsed Power Facilities, Shock/Vibe Labs, etc.) and experience coordinating with them
Experience building test bodies and/or familiar with configuration of test setups
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare and deliver briefings to customers and various levels of management
About Our Team
Group 7220 is comprised of 7 departments entrusted with maintaining the integrity of the nation's nuclear stockpile. Each department is strongly integrated across the group and together are responsible for maintaining the technical basis for the W76-0/1/2, W78, W88, B61-3/4/7/11. In addition to established stockpile work there are a multitude of development and qualification projects including JTAs, Mk4B, and various ALTs. Production activities for the W76-1 and W76-2 AF&F continue at KCNSC and require frequent communication. Additionally, group 7220 leads the development of testers and operational activities for hardware management and engineering leadership for all test body assembly & disassembly activities. Group 7220 is also the interface with test and computational simulation organizations to manage schedule and budget associated with qualification.
