Water Quality Technician


Suburban Water Systems, a part of SouthWest Water Company, is an investor-owned water utility providing high-quality water and reliable service in an approximately 42-square-mile service area that covers all or portions of Glendora, Covina, West Covina, La Puente, Hacienda Heights, City of Industry, Whittier, La Mirada, La Habra, Buena Park and unincorporated portions of California's Los Angeles and Orange counties.


Suburban Water Systems serves a population of about 300,000 through a water distribution system that includes 18 wells, 32 reservoirs and more than 800 miles of pipeline. Our network of facilities pumps and distributes approximately 56,000 acre-feet of water annually.


Primary Duties:


This position will be willing and able to perform the following duties and others as assigned:


Collect Water Quality Samples. Prepares sample bottles for field work, including cleaning, adding chemical preservatives, labeling and organizing sample transport in accordance with methods requirements. Must be familiar with sample collection methods, chain of custody forms, quality control practices, and quantitative analysis procedures. Collects water quality sample results in accordance with Safe Drinking Water Act, Clean Water Act, an all other applicable local, state, or federal regulations.


Conduct Water Quality Field Tests. Conduct water quality field tests as applicable, including but not limited to chlorine/chloramine, temperature, nitrite, and pH, using various handheld devices. Update water quality monitoring schedules and sampling plans.


Conduct Flushing. Assists in the water quality system flushing program to enhance the water quality delivered to customers. Flushing includes the use of Best Management Practices (BMP) to de-chlorinate, and prevent debris being discharged to storm drain systems.


Investigate and resolve customer inquiries. Communicate directly with customers to coordinate investigations and discuss the outcome of the investigation.


Interprets and follows up on water quality results. Reviews water quality results from internal and external lab tests and determines if operational changes are required to comply with drinking water regulations.


Qualifications: All levels require proven experience working with Microsoft Word and Excel; must be able to create a spreadsheet and have knowledge of basic formulas.


Water Quality Tech I: Minimum of 2 years working in industrial, manufacturing, or utility environment with some understanding of quality assurance functions. DDW Distribution Operator 1 and DDW Treatment Operator 1 certification required.


Water Quality Tech II: Minimum of 4 years of experience in the water utility field or closely related occupation. Minimum of 2 years performing water system quality assurance functions. DDW Distribution Operator 2 and DDW Treatment Operator 2 certification required.


Water Quality Tech III: Minimum of 6 years of experience in the water utility field or closely related occupation. Minimum of 4 years performing water system quality assurance functions. DDW Distribution Operator 3, DDW Treatment Operator 3, and AWWA Backflow Tester certification required.


OTHER REQUIREMENTS:


Must possess a valid California Driver's License with an acceptable driving record as determined by the Company's Insurance carrier.


Voluntary On-Call Hours: Periodically may be considered to be available for voluntary on-call duty 24 hours a day. May be available to respond and be present at the job location within the water system in a reasonable amount of time at times outside of normal business hours according to regulations and company policies if opted in to the voluntary on-call program.
