JOB SUMMARY
Working under the direction of the Pump Station Manager, persons in this position are charged with the primary responsibility of working in the operation and maintenance of all sewer lift stations, water storage facilities and water booster stations owned, operated and maintained by Springdale Water Utilities, hereinafter referred to as the Utility. The Pump Station Operator is responsible for ensuring appropriate health and safety measures are established and executed by pump station operators. This is a safety sensitive position.
This position is required to be on call (duty assignment) at scheduled weekly intervals and to be available for working outside normal business hours. Employees on stand by duty must live within a twenty-five minute response time of the office facilities.
GENERAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
This individual assumes responsibility for daily work assignments required for operation, maintenance, and repair of water storage facilities and pump stations (sewer lift stations and water booster stations). Work assignments include, but are not limited, to the following:
Inspect all assigned facilities at frequent intervals to ensure proper working conditions and that security at each location is being maintained.
Perform scheduled preventative maintenance on all pumps, controls, and ancillary equipment
Maintain all motors, switches, controls, standby (emergency) generators, and all other electrical operated devices in a safe and good electrical order
Maintain operating records as required and evaluate operating performance of each pump to assure maximum efficiency
Periodically clean wetwells to remove accumulated grease/scum, rocks, and other debris to assure maximum pumping efficiency
Provide for needed repairs to pumps, valves, controls, electrical systems, emergency generators, and other essential equipment at pump stations, residential STEP tanks and water storage facilities
Responsible for the safekeeping of all tools, equipment parts, and maintenance supplies
Maintaining an adequate inventory of spare parts for emergency repairs on all pump station components including the SCADA system, which are deemed to be critical for the continued and reliable operation of water storage facilities and pump stations
Respond to and resolve pressure sewer system customer requests, complaints, and inquiries.
Ensure that an adequate stock of all needed maintenance supplies are available
Perform daily checks on the operation of the SCADA system and provide for repairs as needed
Assist with grounds maintenance duties which includes mowing, bush hogging, edging, and trimming at each of the water storage facilities and pump stations
Clean and maintain all assigned vehicles, equipment, and tools
Assist in the development of a maintenance program for all assigned trucks and equipment
Provide for the housekeeping, cleaning, and maintenance of workplace facilities
Inspect, maintain and provide repairs as needed on the Utility's security and fire prevention systems
Respond to emergency calls at all times of the day and night
Assist other Utility crews and division, when called upon, in the maintenance, repairs, and minor construction of the Utility's water and wastewater systems
Locate, inspect, operate, and maintain distribution valves and valve boxes
Assist in mapping of valves and hydrants
Prepare reports and records as needed in the identifications and maintenance performed on valves and fire hydrants
Develop and maintain a testing schedule
Maintain test equipment
Collect samples in the water distribution system to assure compliance with the rules and regulations of the Arkansas Department of Health and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Maintain records and files of water samples collected
Perform other tasks or duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES TO MEET JOB REQUIREMENTS
Well versed in the operation preventive and corrective maintenance of water and wastewater pump stations including pumps, motors, valves, electrical systems, SCADA, and ancillary equipment
Capable of using good judgment and making decisions in unusual and emergency situations as well as during routine operations
Ability to detect problems, diagnose corrective measures, and provide for the repair of various types of equipment used at water storage facilities and pump stations
Possess a general knowledge of personal computer/operating systems and the interface with programmable logic controls and two-way radio equipment
Knowledgeable in the use of hand and power-operated tools and their application to perform basic mechanical functions and repairs
Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentage, ratios, and proportions to practical situations
Ability to read and comprehend documents such as safety rules, SDS sheets, operating and maintenance manuals, schematic diagrams, blueprints, and technical specification manuals
Demonstrate ability to understand and interpret verbal and written instructions, and write clearly and comprehensibly
Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
Knowledgeable in the fundamentals of workplace health and safety regulations and demonstrate the ability to work safely and efficiently

Conditions warrant extra precaution when working near high voltage components and motors; potential contact with a variety of combustible, corrosive and toxic gases such as methane and sulfide compounds; the lack of sufficient oxygen in confined spaces such as manholes, wetwells, and tanks; and working in an environment with raw sewage. Exposure to odors, dust, sludge, high noise levels, machinery vibrations, and other hazards are experienced daily. The work requires dexterity of hands and fingers to operate specialized equipment and tools; physical agility to reach overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally; walking over rough, uneven surfaces; standing for extended periods of time; bending at the waist; the ability to hear and speak in order to exchange information; and occasionally lifting of moderately heavy items. Required vision abilities include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
EDUCATION & TRAINING
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Must be able to obtain within three (3) years a Class II Water Distribution Operator's License issued by the Arkansas Department of Health. Encouraged to obtain other operating licenses that are applicable to assigned job duties.
