Sir Richard Branson, Founder, Virgin Galactic YOUR MISSION As a Project Engineer accountable to the Rocket Motor and Propulsion Systems (RMPS) team, you will be part of the integrated project leaders responsible for planning, developing, and executing upgrades, modifications, testing and optimization of the multiple Valves in our Record Setting Hybrid Propulsion System. You will be responsible for developing and validating requirements as well as developing and executing a program plan within the approved cost, schedule, and budget. This includes accountability for activities across the program lifecycle including managing the performance of suppliers and strategic partners to ensure we achieve our goals of opening up space to everyone. Responsibilities Accountable for the integrated development of the Virgin Galactic RMPS Valves, including full lifecycle requirement development, verification planning and executing, and vehicle implementation Support the RMPS Components Program Manager in identifying the engineering scope required across all disciplines to meet program requirements Lead cross-functional engineering teams to complete projects within the program, and coordinate with other stakeholders on the Program Team Support development of Engineering plans to meet program requirements including: Test Plans, Validation and Verification Plans, and other engineering development plans Take ownership of risks to the Program plan and develop integrated proposals to mitigate and retire those risks Support the development and validation of the actuator/valve technical requirements in support of overall program requirements Validate and track schedule and staffing estimates for the Engineering activities Support the Program Manager by assigning and prioritizing responsibilities for engineering tasks related to their project. Perform high level quality control of the work (technical adequacy, plans, personnel's performance) and report regularly on engineering project status to program and engineering leadership Initiate corrective actions for poor quality engineering results Other duties as required in support of Engineering and Program Requirements WHAT YOU BRING Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline with a preference toward aerospace, mechanical, or manufacturing from an accredited Institution 5 years' experience working in and developing successful supplier partnerships anchored by transparent communication Experience providing program leadership for a multidisciplinary/functional team demonstrating a track record of success Demonstrated success managing complex engineering projects/systems ideally with a focus on Supplier Project Management Experience with program/project execution including monitoring and control through program measures, such as but not limited to budget fidelity, resource fill rate, CPI/SPI (Earned Value), and product cost measures Experience successfully supporting negotiations with suppliers to achieve desired product cost targets Conducting trade studies to develop business cases resulting in recommendations to support investment decisions Strong written and verbal communication skills Able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and thrive in a complex, and rapidly evolving business environment Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people Self-directed with demonstrated passion for our mission Strong computer skills, including MS Office Suite and Engineering Applications (Solid modeling, FEA, CFD, etc.) Preferred Skills and Experience 8+ years relevant experience working in, developing, and successfully leading project execution with strategic partners Experience with Oracle and the deployment of Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) and Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRP), or other similar ERP system Experience with business case development and strategic planning Physical and/or Additional Requirements Must be able to work all shifts and available for overtime as well as weekends when needed Must be able to stand for extended periods - 9 hours minimum Must be able to stoop, bend, crawl, and being able to maneuver in tight spaces Physically able to handle items weighing up to 40lbs (unassisted) ITAR Requirements To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR 120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
