Job Details

The Project Engineer is responsible for all routine on-site project administration, scheduling, and engineering.

He or she will be responsible for managing the work planning process, resolving technical issues, and issue resolution. The ideal candidate will plan, coordinate, and manage on-site construction engineering activities and schedules and manages subcontractors. Prepares monthly pay estimates and updates the schedule. Prepares, coordinates, and updates budgets, change orders, and cost reports for Project Manager review and approval.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering-related (Civil, Industrial, Mechanical, Construction Engineering) or Construction Management field
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as a Field/Office Engineer
  • Previous experience in or exposure to the heavy civil and/or marine construction industry
  • Valid driver's license for occasional required travel
  • Self-motivated and proven ability to lead collaborative efforts; assumes responsibility for entire job function
  • Work as part of a team; ability to lead others and fosters a productive, positive work environment.
  • Able to work with a variety of staff and coordinate effectively with junior and senior managers or craft personnel.
  • Demonstrated proficiency to develop, analyze, and maintain complex project schedules.
  • Demonstrated ability to implement, utilize, and manage the cost management process including quantities, cost reports, forecasting, labor reports, documentation, and recordkeeping
  • Ability to efficiently perform the contract administration functions including correspondence, document control, daily reports, and change order/claims preparation.
  • Ability to efficiently perform project administration processes including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and subcontractor/supplier correspondence and tracking
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written, including ability to compose and edit professional letters to external organizations including customer, vendor, government agencies, and subcontractors
  • Ability to organize and supervise individual engineering functions
  • Strong computer proficiency and Microsoft Office experience; ability to adapt to new technologies and processes
  • Demonstrates good management and leadership skills
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Strong mathematic and scientific reasoning skills; ability to utilize logic and sound judgement to solve complex problems
  • Demonstrates a strong work ethic and is eager to learn
  • Ability to work well in a non-structured environment
  • Excellent grammar, composition, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills

Travel Requirements:
  • Limited travel may be required

Technical/Engineering:
  • Be an Incident and Injury Free Leader
  • Participate in the project safety process, conduct safety inspections, and contribute to weekly toolbox meetings and safety training
  • Provide technical support in construction planning, quality control, interpretation of design, application of construction methods, resolution and documentation of design conflicts, and constructability reviews to ensure successful job completion.
  • Has project-level responsibility for contract administration & compliance, as well as project engineering (lift plans and work plans)
  • Manage scheduling and monthly progress narratives, as well as owner and subcontractor pay estimates
  • Recognize and provide timely notification of potential contractual risks or issues; independently develop mitigation plans
  • Prepare required information for presentation at project reviews
  • Generate applicable RFIs (Request for Information) on contractual or design-related issues
  • Supervise cost report management and lead regular review meetings
  • Responsible for complete understanding of the contract including our own as well as the client/owner's contractual obligations
  • Ensure clients/owners are notified in a timely manner regarding extra work, design changes, delays, etc.
  • Manage on-site project document control system
  • Assist Project Manager with reviewing and preparing month-end cost reports; assist with cost forecasting and revenue projections
  • Understand and promote innovation for cost and schedule improvements
