The Payload and Ground Systems (PGS) division of Northrop Grumman's Space Systems sector seeks team members who want to solve interesting, complex problems which protect our nation. Northrop Grumman SYNOPTICS is the world-wide leader in the growth, fabrication, and coating of crystalline materials used in laser systems. These "solid-state" laser crystals are used in products ranging from medical lasers to military laser systems. The Charlotte facility has been operating for over 40 years in the laser industry and has developed the reputation of providing the highest quality products with timely deliveries. Within the facility, solid-state oxide and fluoride crystals are grown from a high-temperature melt. Roles and Responsibilities

In this role, you will be the technical leader providing insight and guidance to solve challenging growth issues. You will oversee the creation and management of improvement projects - both inter-product line and inter-departmental process projects. You will lead department engineering personnel, to include performance management, mentoring, teaching, counseling/discipline, and training. Additionally, you will provide routine engineering support to production manufacturing employees and maintain ongoing communication with Growth supervisor. You will be responsible for the accurate documentation of substandard run reviews and engineering projects, and for growth station emergency and safety of crystal growth process/procedures. You will report/communicate crystal growth status with downstream departments and management team. Additionally, you will analyze and report failure mode for substandard runs to incorporate new learnings and recommend/implement corrective actions. Finally, you will collaborate with engineers and technicians for improvement and trouble-shooting of process and equipment issues.

Basic Qualifications
  • 5 years of relevant experience with a Bachelor's degree; 3 years of relevant experience with a Masters' degree; 0 years of relevant experience with a PhD
  • Experience in crystal growth operations with multiple production lines
  • Fundamental understanding of growth defect formation
Preferred Qualifications
  • Degree(s) in STEM discipline(s), particularly graduate degrees in Material Science
  • In-depth understanding of crystal control system including power control, weight sensing, and growth filtering
  • Previous leadership/supervisory experience
  • Experience with SQL, MS Office products, and Origin

Salary Range: $94,300 USD - $141,500 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
