ICU Medical is currently seeking to hire a Principal R&D Engineer (Mechanical) on a full time, permanent basis. This role must be performed on site in Minneapolis, MN but offers hybrid flexibility to work remotely 1-3 days per week. Relocation assistance available for non-local candidates.

Summary:

The Principal R&D Engineer (Mechanical) will support the research and development engineering team within ICU Medical's temperature management business unit. This role will be supporting all R&D engineering aspects of the product development process and post market activities including both hardware and consumables products. Completes complex engineering projects with peer input and guidance from engineering management. Works on advanced, complex technical projects or business issues requiring state of the art technical or industry knowledge. Goals are generally communicated in solution or project goal terms. May provide a leadership role for the work group and consistently make decisions regarding the overall goals and objectives of significant programs or segments of the organization. Work with management to turn product strategy into action.


Responsibilities:

  • Analyzes, evaluates, and plans methods for the solution of complex problems. Conducts investigations of considerable complexity pertaining to the development of new designs, methods, materials, or processes, and investigates possible applications of the results. Contributes to strategy.
  • Defines parameters and boundaries for lower-level design activities. Establishes metrics for key aspects of system performance. Requires multi-disciplinary expertise or in-depth knowledge in a single discipline.
  • Develops project direction together with management. Accepts the highest level of accountability.
  • Supervises the work of engineers. Responsible for training/mentoring less-experienced engineers in area of expertise. Responsible for the performance evaluations of all reports. Resolves complex problems within teams, departments, projects, programs and cross-functionally. Manages activities of reports to achieve goals consistent with team objectives.
  • Delivers communications tailored to the needs of the receiver (managers, peers, customers) with appropriate frequency to maximize its utility and promote cross-functional collaboration. Brings substantive conflicts and disagreements into the open and attempts to resolve them collaboratively; builds consensus. Contributes to IP portfolio growth through regular invention submissions.
  • This position is required to assure compliance of Company operations to all applicable laws, regulations and standards, good business practices and company documented procedures (including knowledge of all standards, government occupational health and environmental regulations and statutes related to the site).
  • Engage others, promote, and participate in Environmental, Health, and Safety initiatives, focusing on continuous improvement.


Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of engineering experience with Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Engineering; Mechanical or Biomedical engineering preferred.
  • Company leader in your domain of expertise. Ability to quickly and easily obtain effective expertise within scope of influence.
  • Deep knowledge of best practices and subject matter expertise on engineering discipline.
  • Experience with Solidworks or similar CAD software.
  • Statistical analysis experience with Minitab or a similar analysis software tool preferred.
  • GD&T experience nice to have.
  • Medical device or experience in a similarly regulated industry preferred.
