The Opportunity We are looking for a Principal engineer - Studies to manage studies and field trials focused on the investigation of new technologies and infrastructure requirements to support the decarbonization/electrification of haulage systems at Bingham Canyon Mine. This role requires the coordination of multi-disciplinary teams to produce studies, management of stakeholders across the value stream, and facilitation of independent project reviews. The role will support and report through the Projects and Engineering team located at the Daybreak offices in South Jordan, UT. Rio Tinto Kennecott is a fully integrated mining operation located just outside Salt Lake City, Utah, US. Kennecott is a wholly owned subsidiary of Rio Tinto. For more than 110 years, Kennecott has been mining and processing minerals from the rich orebody of the Bingham Canyon Mine. What the role entails This role is a great opportunity to be involved in the planning and delivery of projects from initiation to completion and focused on achieving objectives through managing resources, budgets, changes, and risks. Projects may be capital or expense projects, functional or cross-functional projects, or related to broad business improvement initiatives. You will be: Managing studies and field trials focused on the investigation of new technologies and infrastructure requirements to support the decarbonization/electrification of haulage systems at Bingham Canyon Mine. Leading, planning, and coordinating the study or implementation stages of projects, including the management of all functional areas Responsible for resourcing, contract management, progress reporting, and people management Accountable for safely and successfully delivering the project and business case by ensuring the results meet technical, quality, cost, and schedule requirements as per the lifecycle stages Planning relevant safety requirements into all activities, tasks, and projects based on assessed hazards, identified critical risks, and mitigating actions Ensuring proper project governance and stage-gate approvals Applying technical/professional knowledge to solve complex problems and recommend solutions and contribute to process improvements What you will need for this role To succeed in this role, you will have: College degree in mining, mechanical or electrical engineering, or another relevant related technical field. 10 years or more of progressively responsible experience in project management experience in heavy industry. Experience with relevant decarbonization/electrification studies in the heavy industry Experience with computer system applications, including Word, Excel, and MS Project. Strong written and verbal communication skills. It will also be beneficial if you have: Project management certification or advanced project management training.
