Job Overview

Position Summary

Performs body repairs to damaged District vehicles and equipment. Paints vehicles, equipment, and other miscellaneous items. Performs upfitting and minor mechanical repairs.

Essential Functions

  1. Estimate cost of repairing District vehicles and non-District vehicles which have been involved in collisions.
  2. Repaint automobiles, trucks, and construction machinery using many types of paints including lacquers, acrylic enamels, base coat clear coats, water base paint and epoxies.
  3. Match and blend paint.
  4. Work with plastic and fiberglass body fillers and rebuilds fiberglass components
  5. Operate air spray guns and gun cleaning station.
  6. Repair dents, rust, hail damage, wet sands, polishes, performs buffing and minor frame damage.
  7. Replace body parts damaged beyond repair.
  8. Perform some vehicle repair including wiring repair, A/C repair, and miscellaneous parts replacement.
  9. Perform minor welding jobs with acetylene torch and wire welder.
  10. Apply and remove decals to District vehicles.
  11. Remove and replace fenders, bumpers, and other damaged body parts.
  12. Prepare new vehicles for service, installing flares, toolboxes, bins, and other special equipment.

Responsibilities/Accountabilities

  1. Understand, keep abreast of, and comply with federal, state and local regulations that affect body shop operations, such as hazardous waste disposal, EPA Air Quality Regulations, etc.
  2. Understand and perform all areas of total body repair, including repair estimating, rust and dent repair, panel replacement, painting, paint matching and blending, and welding frame component repair and replacement.
  3. Understand and comply with all pertinent District Policies and Procedures.
  4. Paint valves, drips, traffic signs, and many other miscellaneous items.
  5. Letter signs by using stencils and label machine.
  6. Perform a variety of other duties as assigned.
  7. Maintain inventory of supplies and needed repairs on vehicles.
  8. Drive District vehicle.

Job Requirements

  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in complete body repair at a full-service body repair facility, with technical school diploma or eight (8) years of experience without a technical school diploma.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to assist internal and external customers, co-workers and management professionally, regardless of provocation.

Required Computer Skills

  • Experience with personal computers, tablets, and/or other electronic devices to include, but not limited to, Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, Word) and enterprise-wide software (e.g., SAP).
  • Ability to learn new or upgraded computer software as required.

Required Education/Experience

  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED).

Required License/Certification

  • Have and maintain a valid Driver s License.
  • Must become and remain certified to wear respirators within one (1) month of hire or selection (if not currently certified). Certification requires passing a Pulmonary Function Test, Fit Test and compliance with the guidelines of the District s Respiratory Protection Program.
  • An unrestricted Class A Commercial Driver s License (CDL) with tanker endorsement is required to be obtained within six (6) months of being placed in this position and then maintained.
  • Complete Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Area Source Rule training within 180 days of hire. Training to include hands-on and classroom instruction.
    • The District will pay for initial and ongoing re-certification while employed in a Transportation Paint and Body Mechanic position.
  • Current certification in the following (5) Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) categories listed below will be required withing twenty-four (24) months of hire or selection, two of which must be obtained within twelve (12) months of hire or selection:
    • B2 Painting & Refinishing
    • B3 Non-Structural Analysis & Damage Repair
    • B4 Structural Analysis & Damage Repair
    • B5 Mechanical & Electrical Components
    • B6 Damage Analysis & Estimating

Note: ASE Re-certification is required. The District will pay for initial and ongoing re-certification while employed in a Transportation Paint and Body Mechanic position.

Required Testing/Verification

  • Employee(s) in this position are covered under the Department of Transportation Drug and Alcohol testing provision. This includes random testing.

Preferred Education, Experience and/or Skills

  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification in all body courses preferred.

Work Environments

  • Work takes place in a shop environment with exposure to shop chemicals, cleaners, solvents, paints, etc.
