OVERVIEW:

The Packaging Engineer is responsible for developing, designing, and testing standards and guidelines for developing packaging solutions for the organization's products. This position works with internal resources (i.e., engineering, product management, operations, sourcing, etc.) and packaging suppliers to achieve functional packaging goals.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Oversee and manage complete packaging development process, including the creation of packaging designs, prototype development, and performance testing
  • Collaborate with cross functional teams to ensure the most effective packaging solutions
  • Identify packaging challenges involving designs, materials and processes, and provide creative, timely, and cost-effective solutions
  • Analyze engineering drawings and specifications of product to determine physical characteristics of item, special handling, environmental and safety requirements, and types of materials required for packaging
  • Establish standards and guidelines for packaging supplier evaluation. Evaluate and select packaging suppliers/vendors; periodically conduct vendor reviews
  • Participate in product introduction teams, to deliver new products to market
  • Specify and recommend efficiency tools and test methods to develop and validate packaging designs
  • Work with the manufacturing department to ensure that the packaging designs are optimized for manufacturability


WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The Packaging Engineer spends most of their time either in an office environment or at the manufacturing plant. The office is an open and collaborative space where work is performed both independently and with the team. When at the plant, work is performed in a more traditional manufacturing environment, with higher noise levels and frequent movement of people and equipment.

REPORTING STRUCTURE:
This position reports directly to the Senior Design Manager.

LOCATION:
Construction Innovations facilities and offices are located in Sacramento, CA and Mather, CA.

COMPENSATION:
Construction Innovations pays hourly/salary rates commensurate with each employee's knowledge, experience and skill level.

DESIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor's Degree in mechanical engineering or packaging engineering preferred
  • 3+ years' experience in industrial or consumer packaging
  • Knowledge and understanding of packaging design validation standards (ISO, ASTM, etc.), drafting, and specification standards
  • Working knowledge of computer systems including CAD, Solidworks, and Microsoft Tools including MS Project.
  • Must be able to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Strong problem solving and decision-making skills
  • Must be able to work independently and as part of a team
  • Good communication skills, orally and in writing
  • Understanding of process improvement, quality improvement concepts (ISO 9001 certification is a plus)
  • Experience in rapid prototyping
  • Experience in project management

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Required to have visual acuity to operate various tools, read fine print, and identify colors.
  • Regularly stoop, kneel, reach with hands and arms at waist level and below the waist.
  • Continuously stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms above shoulder height; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk and hear.
  • Must be able to lift, push, pull at least 50 lbs. unassisted.
