The OSP Construction Technician is responsible for aiding in the placing, splicing, and maintenance of communications infrastructure and telecommunication pathways, including aerial, buried, and underground. The OSP Construction Technician I will also maintain telecommunications infrastructures such as copper and fiber cable, utility poles, and various communication and construction equipment for wireline and wireless communications.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Assists and supports splicer(s) in placing, rearranging, and removing the outside plant, including an aerial, underground, submarine, buried, block, and house cables, poles, and associated hardware/fixtures, including materials handling and tracking.
• Assists and supports splicer(s) in performing fiber optic cable prep, closure setup, splicing, and testing.
• Responsible for connecting wires and cables to terminals and attaching /detaching various hardware to wires, cables, buildings, or poles under direct supervision.
• Performing construction work using designated equipment (i.e., digging holes, placing poles, etc.) under direct supervision.
• Operating Company motor vehicles of varying gross weights to transport equipment.
• May involve any or all climbing ladders, poles, working aloft in aerial lifts and buckets.
• Requires the ability to see and distinguish wire and cable colors.
• May involve varying shifts, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and unscheduled shifts as determined by the needs of the business.
• Receive and follow verbal and written work orders and instructions from supervisors and senior employees.
• Work with qualified employees to learn and analyze complex schematic drawings to determine work to be done, methods, and sequence of tasks.
• Ability to follow standards and practices while meeting service deadlines under direct supervision.
• Perform housekeeping duties of assigned Company vehicles and various work locations for the safety of the employee and protection of the public and the facilities under construction as instructed by senior employees.
• When directed, communicate and coordinate with other work groups to perform tests on work in progress or completed and obtains additional information regarding work assignment as needed.
• Perform preventative maintenance on assigned company tools, equipment, and motor vehicle.
• Perform repetitive tasks, e.g., manually digging poles/and or holes.
Qualifications:
• One-year construction and telecom experience is a plus
• Valid state driver's license with a clean driving record
• CDL Class A, B or C preferred.
• Ability to see and perceive differences in wire and cable colors.
• Ability to lift and move up to 100lbs.
• Understand that safety is paramount in everything the construction team does.
• AutoCad/Visio experience a plus
• Proficient with Microsoft Office suite of products.
• Excellent verbal, written, phone, and interpersonal skills.
Compensation
Non-Exempt - Hourly $18 - $20 ($2,500 Sign on Bonus)
