Job Description:
The Materials Engineering Department, which functions within RMD Engineering's Mechanical Products Team (MPT), is seeking engineers to fill a wide range of opportunities with positions in Electrical Failure Analysis, Metallurgical Engineering, Chemistry, Non-Destructive Inspection, Advanced Materials (Ceramics, Composites, Signature Management, etc.) and other Material Sciences. These roles will offer the qualified candidate the opportunity to:
Solve difficult real-world materials problems
Gain hands-on experience with testing and evaluation of actual metals, adhesives, composites, ceramics, and other materials
Test, Analyze, and Select materials for product design
Have a direct impact in support of defense programs and their missions
Collaborate with subject matter experts in a wide variety of disciplines across the Materials Engineering Department Develop knowledge and experience in metals, metal processes, adhesives, electrical components, ceramics, composites, polymers, elastomers, global substances, mechanical testing, fastener technology, non-destructive inspection techniques, plating, coatings, corrosion as well as knowledge of missile and radar systems
Responsibilities to Anticipate:
Utilizing a wide variety of laboratory instruments and equipment to characterize material properties and solve materials problem. This equipment may include microscopes, mechanical testers, machining tools, X-ray, acoustic scanners, spectrometers, chromatographs, thermal analyzers, electrical testing equipment, ovens, and other tools as needed.
Ability to perform non-destructive troubleshooting and destructive testing when assessing material properties and/or failure analysis, that includes hands-on application knowledge of instruments and tools associated with your discipline.
Following standard written protocols, as well as developing and fabricating unique test plans and test setups
Detailed documentation of results and communication of technical information by way of presentations, scientific reports, and other means
Creation and maintenance of material and process specifications.
Communication with cross-disciplined teams including Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality and Supply Chain organizations, resolving issues related to materials and material selection, ensuring the use of compliant materials at RMD
Managing and coordinating a wide variety of simultaneous tasks within set schedule requirements, while potentially spending the majority of time onsite in the laboratory. The candidate will become part of a multi-disciplined team, supporting quick turn of analysis that requires careful attention to detail, adhering to program schedule and budget.
Qualifications You Must Have:
Education: Masters of Science degreein one of the following disciplines:
Chemistry (American Chemical Society (ACS) Certified)
Material Science
Metallurgical Engineering
Ceramics Engineering
Composites Engineering
Electrical Engineering (with hands-on component or circuit analysis)
- This position requires 12 months or less of relevant professional work experience (excluding internships).
The ability to obtain and maintain a US security clearance prior to the start date. U.S. citizenship is required as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance
Laboratory coursework or hands-on experience with lab analysis

Demonstrated ability to lead and complete scientific based projects including failure analysis investigations
Applicable internships or undergraduate research
Ability to troubleshoot instrument problems, perform analysis, and interpret data

Understanding of material safety datasheets, technical datasheets, and internal, commercial, and military specifications
Strong communication, interpersonal, planning, teaming, and time management skills
Ability to effectively work parallel analyses and meet changing schedule deadlines and priorities
Proficient in MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
Ability to travel to government and other facilities in support of program activities
Knowledge of measuring material properties using any of the aforementioned instruments and/or equipment. You must have had some hands-on experience making measurements in a laboratory setting, whether it be in coursework, internships, and/or undergraduate research that could include analytical Instrumental knowledge (such as Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Thermal Analysis, Chromatography, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), etc.), understanding of material safety datasheets, technical datasheets and specifications, and/or application knowledge of various test equipment (such as DMM, curve tracer, parametric analyzers, multimeters, megohmmeters, Instrons, shore hardness, etc) depending on field of study.
