Company Name: Air Squared

Title of Position: Mechanical Engineering Fall 2022 and Spring 2023 Intern

Position Type: Full-time; non-exempt

Pay Range: $20-$25/hour based on qualifications and experience.

Air Squared Manufacturing, Inc. is an OEM manufacturer of scroll type compressors, vacuum pumps and expanders for the medical, aerospace, fuel cell and power generation industries. Air Squared offers exciting career opportunities working on projects including NASA MOXIE, Leading Electric and Autonomous Vehicle OEM, DOE Clean Energy initiatives ranging from nuclear fusion and the Advanced Research Projects Agency - Energy (ARPA-e), and other cutting-edge projects.

We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer Intern who is driven, perceptive, organized, has leadership abilities, works well with others and has good attention to detail.

This internship is ideal for a senior standing student pursuing a B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical Engineering.

Scroll compressors are unique in that their designs include a variety of Mechanical Engineering specialties to fully understand the working principles. These specialties include: Heat Transfer: As compression occurs most gasses heat up. Typically, this heat needs to be dissipated during operating in order to increase reliability and performance. Thermodynamics: Compression or expansion of gasses is a thermodynamic process. In order to understand what is occurring fundamentally in the compressor a good understanding of thermodynamics needs to be understood.

Mechanics of Materials: Air Squared fabricates scroll devices from a variety of materials. Properties such as strength, density, resistance to heat and CTE need to be considered.

Dynamics: The dynamic operation of scroll devices needs to be understood in order to estimate bearing loads and shaft deflections.

Statics: When performing static balancing of a scroll compressor, basic principals in statics are used.

Fluid Dynamics: Air Squared uses software such as CFD to analyze compressible flow. Properties such as cooling, and pressure drop are derived.

The job will include assisting in the design, prototyping and testing of new scroll compressor, expander and vacuum pump designs. This includes detailing the design to be ready for manufacturing as well as producing necessary documentation for machine shops.

Mechanical Engineering Intern Responsibilities will include:

  • Strong understanding of SolidWorks or some similar software
