Job Overview

JT: Mechanical Engineer IV

Location: Charlotte, NC or Clear Lake, TX

We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer to provide structural, mechanical, and piping (SMP) design support for capital projects at domestic and international facilities. These designs shall be safe, operable, economical, and environmentally sound. In this role the Mechanical Engineer will also provide operation and maintenance support related to SMP topics for all facilities.

Key Focus/Responsibilities:

Safety

  • Maintain keen focus on safe designs of capital projects, and individual and team safety.
Capital Design

  • Provide proactive SMP engineering input to capital project scope, budget and schedule development as required.
  • Work with other design and drafting teammates to develop and maintain design packages and solutions that are within the scope of the capital project and are accurate, workable, economical, and in compliance with all pertinent standards, codes, and specifications.
  • Provide detailed engineering design deliverables, as needed. This includes:
    • Development of equipment data sheets and specifications for pumps, vessels, heat exchangers, hoppers, storage tanks, and many other misc. items.
    • Perform Technical Bid Evaluations and correspond with vendors to clarify issues.
    • Mechanical design activities such as P&ID review, equipment drawing review, plant layout, piping design review, and development of construction packages.
  • Provide independent guidance and oversight of outsourced capital project detailed design activities, special studies, etc. Monitor and review specific discipline contractor activities and progress related to schedule and suggest necessary corrective actions.
  • Provide specific discipline technical advice to construction management personnel to assure a safe and accurate installation of project SMP assets.
  • Maintain specific project documentation and design requirements documentation related to use of outsourced detailed design engineering.
Technical Service

  • Maintain informed, comprehensive knowledge of company Eng specs/stds and HS&E policies to provide wide-ranging technical support activities and evaluation efforts, including problem solving, and failure analysis related to SMP installations.
  • Provide reliable solutions to modify operating facilities to improve safety and/or reduce costs.
  • Maintain current knowledge of industry standards and regulations and apply as appropriate on capital projects or in support of technical problems.
  • Provide specific discipline expertise to assure continuity and maintenance of Company's Engineering Specifications and Standards, including best practice documentation related to instrumentation and control systems design.
Management

  • Help to recruit and develop/train SMP engineering discipline personnel in the engineering organization and throughout the company.
  • Direct and supervise engineering contractor in the detail design of capital projects.
Accountabilities

  • Safety - no recordable injuries (personally or because of projects).
  • Ensure that project funding estimate input for SMP are compiled and submitted correctly and timely with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Ensure that designs and installations follow all codes, regulations, and company and industry standards and specifications.
  • Ensure that technical content and quality of designs and installation meet requirements of project scopes.
  • Ensure that specific discipline design activities meet schedule and budget targets as prescribed by the capital project.
  • Exhibit specific discipline expertise while preparing technical evaluations with a keen ability to collect and analyze background information to arrive at various solutions.
Essential Qualifications

  • BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering.
  • 7-10+ years of experience in the Chemical Process Industry or similar industry.
  • Significant experience (including specification, design, commissioning, startup, and maintenance) with plant layout, mechanical equipment (pressure vessels, heat exchangers, pumps, compressors, etc.) and piping systems in industrial chemical or petro-chemical processing facilities.
  • Familiar with applicable engineering code requirements and standards (OSHA, ASME, ANSI, API etc.) including specific design & evaluation experience with such documents.
  • Excellent Computer skills - Word, Excel, AutoCAD.
  • Experience in the utilization of pressure vessel sizing and pipe stress analysis tools.
  • Independent self-starter with results-oriented focus.
  • Excellent team member skills with ability to work with all levels of plant personnel.
  • Proven ability in problem solving and multi-tasking.
  • Outstanding written and oral communications skills.
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to travel to company's domestic and international plant sites.
Desired Qualifications

  • Capital project design experience.
  • Plant work experience highly desired.
  • Experience with SAP.
  • Bilingual - fluent in Spanish and English is desired.
