Grail is seeking a dedicated individual to lead the R&D Process Engineering team, with a focus on transferring products, processes, and technologies into operations at our facility in RTP, North Carolina. . In this position, the candidate will work closely with R&D, Automation, Software, and Operations teams as we develop procedures to support execution of various labs and platforms, including a groundbreaking, high-throughput laboratory. Candidates should have strong hands-on experience in process development and documentation within a cGMP, GCLP, and/or CAP/CILA environment.
You Will:
  • Explore our state-of-the-art sample processing platform and drive the optimal development of the necessary loading, usage, and maintenance procedures, required to support the system for continuous operation
  • Coordinate with, and gather guidance from, Operations Team stakeholders to integrate the platform into existing workstreams
  • Set team goals, allocate resources, and empower team members to drive delivery across a breadth of programs
  • Motivate and mentor employees both within and outside of their teams
  • Analyze data from multiple sources and help the team balance operator efficiency, throughput capacity, cost of goods, and system uptime while maintaining a safe and compliant work environment
  • Write and maintain user manuals, process flow charts, SOP's, and work instructions around the developed methods
  • Lead and support troubleshooting efforts, including root cause analysis, to resolve issues during development testing
  • Identify and discuss opportunities for process improvement with development teams
  • Balance competing deliverables within a project schedule without direct supervision
  • Define, track, and report on key metrics and progress in meeting project milestones


Your Background Will Include:
  • A Bachelor's of Science degree in an Engineering or Life Sciences Discipline.
  • A minimum of eight (8) years of relevant manufacturing or sample processing experience.
  • A minimum of three (3) years, providing technical leadership, performing translational work, and leading cross functional projects.
  • Experience transferring prototypes and concepts from R&D into operational environments.
  • Demonstrated success writing and executing test protocols, procedural instructions, and process engineering related documents.
  • Possesses applied knowledge of root cause analysis and troubleshooting techniques.
  • Adherence to design control practices during product development.
  • Experience in supporting customer-facing products.
  • Previous experience working in matrixed and cross-functional project teams.
  • Ability to work from Durham, NC facility.
  • Ability to take initiative and independently drive projects to completion with detailed and efficient execution and reporting.
  • Basic knowledge of molecular biology to support equipment activities.


Preferred Skills & Experience:
  • A Master's/PhD in Science In an Engineering or Life Sciences Discipline.
  • A minimum of one (1) years of direct people management.
  • History of working with cGMP-compliant facilities.
  • Experience operating liquid handling robots and other laboratory automation tools
  • Experience performing risk assessments, such as failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA).
  • Experience working in a clinically regulated environment.
  • Able to perform statistical analysis of process data to identify trends or shifts in performance.
  • Prior history working with Illumina NGS technology platforms.
  • Excellent technical troubleshooting skills and mechanical proficiency
