Job Summary
The Lighting and Audio Technician provides production support primarily to the Theatre program and occasionally to the Film program. In addition, the Technician is also a part of a team of Performing Arts Technicians that serves and supports other performing arts disciplines in the College, such as Dance, Music and special events. Taking lead direction from the Technical Production Manager, work assignments/schedules from the Coordinator of Production, and receiving specific artistic direction from Faculty and guest Designers, and Theatrical Directors, the Lighting and Audio Technician requires general supervision and works independently to achieve specified outcomes. The Technician specializes in audio and electrical lighting systems, sound reinforcement and playback, and is responsible for the execution of lighting, projection, and sound for the University Dance Theater as well as other Music, Dance, Theater and Film spaces as assigned. As the primary lighting and audio technician and chief electrical safety officer for Dance and Music, the Technician must follow the National Electrical Code and California Title 8 (California OSHA) safety requirements for electrical installations. The Audio and Lighting Technician works from verbal and written instructions and is responsible for the organization of projects, as well as managing parts and supplies for all audio, lighting, and projection equipment. The Lighting and Audio Technician will work closely with student crews, train students to run Audio and Lighting boards, work with Audio & Lighting equipment safely, and supervise student assistants. The Lighting and Audio Technician is responsible for setting up, operating, repairing, and performing regular maintenance on lighting, projection, sound, and special effects equipment, as well as maintaining a proper inventory of all expendables such as lamps, cables, gaff tape, and more. The Technician will at various times design the sound and lighting for studio and/or smaller productions, as well as support the productions of the student clubs in the programs. Using creativity, ingenuity, technical abilities, and knowledge of production goals and themes, the Audio and Lighting Technician creates, implements, and fabricates lighting, projection, sound, and special effects from designer and director specifications. The venues of performance spaces that the Lighting and Audio Technician will support include, but are not limited to; University Theatre, Hal Todd Theatre, Hammer Theatre, Dance Theatre, Morris Dailey Auditorium, Dance Studios, Music Concert Hall, Music Rehearsal Studios, campus outdoor venues, and on-location film sets.
Key Responsibilities
Execute stage lighting, projection and sound designs primarily for the Dance Program and occasionally for Music and Theatre programs, with a priority on health and safety for all productions
Create, implement, and fabricate lighting, projection, and special effects for all productions
Set up, calibrate and operate lighting, projection and sound equipment for all productions
Provide video support for projection systems and playback devices used for live performances, camera systems used for capture or live streaming of performances and systems used in performance spaces for presentational events
Function as Lighting and Sound Crew Chief for all student crews and coordinate with Stage Managers during all load-ins, tech rehearsals, previews, performances and strikes
Support lighting and sound requests and provide support in the Music Concert Hall and other Theatre production spaces as needed
Provide lighting, projection, and sound for department and College special events
Train and supervise student crews and operate lighting, sound, and projection equipment
Coordinate crew staff and billing for over hire labor, if required per production
Perform preventative maintenance and repair of all lighting, projection, and sound systems and equipment to ensure all equipment is in working order every semester
Maintain orderly and safe storage of all lighting, projection, and sound equipment & cables
Provide estimates for the cost of supplies and materials; obtain quotes from vendors; and assist in the ordering of parts and supplies
Recommend replacement equipment before it becomes obsolete or nonfunctional
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Comprehensive knowledge of lighting, projection, and audio engineering for Dance and or Theatre and a working knowledge in Film production lighting
Ability to read and understand light plots, sound plots, ground plans, and center line sections
Ability to execute lighting, projection, and sound designs for all productions, as well as special events, from load-in through strike
Strong working knowledge of the operation of sound equipment, such as microphones, amplifiers, and loudspeakers; lighting equipment including LED and motorized fixtures; projection equipment and fixtures; and associated software applications
Strong working knowledge of DMX systems, universes, as well as Dante networks
Thorough knowledge of current ETC lighting control systems and digital audio consoles
Ability to live stream productions
Thorough knowledge of safe practices of rigging and support systems
Strong working knowledge of lighting and sound software applications, Excel, and database management for inventory
Ability to support classroom instruction by performing classroom demonstrations related to production specialty
Working knowledge of design principles and the ability to translate design specifications, blueprints, or drawings into applicable costume, scenery, and lighting and sound production
General knowledge of basic electrical theory and working knowledge of lighting and/or sound effects
Working knowledge of safety requirements and standards related to stage and set construction, lighting, and stage operations
Thorough knowledge of safety requirements and standards related production support specialty and stage operations and ability to train others in safety measures and ensure compliance with codes and regulations
Comprehensive knowledge of historical periods for design and construction of materials and effects related to applicable production specialty
Thorough knowledge of basic electrical theory and usage related to audio and lighting effects and working knowledge of lighting, sound and stage effect techniques, including the ability to improvise lighting, sound, stage property, and other stage effects
Required Qualifications
Professional training or applicable college coursework
Two (2) to Three (3) years of experience working for a theater, repertory or stock company engaged in the applicable production specialty such as costume construction, stage and set construction, lighting production, and/or sound/audio production
Preferred Qualifications
B.A. degree in Technical Theatre Arts/Drama
Three or more years of experience working for a professional theater, repertory, or stock company engaged in lighting production and/or sound/audio production, including work as a Master Electrician and/or A1

Anticipated Hiring Range: $5,189/month - $5,500/month
