Responsibilities Job Purpose The Lead Controls Engineer provides subject matter expertise and direction for the Pattern operational fleet of power generation facilities. Specifically, this requires detailed understanding of mechanical systems and power conversion systems of wind & solar generators. The Lead Controls Engineer will be responsible for understanding how these components function, developing standards and procedures for ensuring compliance, and deploying solutions to improve component reliability and optimize performance of the equipment. The Lead Controls Engineer will also utilize engineering concepts and accumulated knowledge to efficiently diagnose and manage control system failures and related issues to continuously improve the Pattern fleet. Key Accountabilities The key responsibilities will include the following: Ensure proper controls configuration of the growing Pattern Fleet of Power Plants, both originally as well as when implementing proposed changes or updates. Develop methods for monitoring performance of controls systems to pro-actively manage and mitigate control system and software related issues. Identify and implement critical and continuous improvements for control systems. Originate and/or evaluate controls related modification and upgrade opportunities for the Pattern fleet, driving innovation in enhancing our project's capabilities. Oversee and provide project management support to the Original Equipment Manufacturers with Root Cause Analysis (RCA) for controls related issues. Act as Pattern's subject matter expert for power plant related controls and assist in technology evaluation, power plant design reviews, initial power plant commissioning and testing, and primary technical point of contact with control system suppliers. Work cooperatively with other discipline engineering leaders in the group to ensure proper integration of controls into their work scopes. Provide technical support for both technicians in the field as well as our Operations Control Center (OCC) for controls issues. Qualifications Education/Experience/Qualifications Required Educational Experience A Bachelor's degree in Controls, Electrical, Systems or similar Engineering degree is required as a minimum. Master's degree preferred. Work Experience 5 years or more experience as controls engineer in wind, power generation or related industry. Wind Industry experience HIGHLY preferred but not required. Additional Qualifications Must be able to climb modern wind turbine without a lift or climb assist. Strong technical capabilities and a creative, curious, self-driven work ethic. Ability to work well in and/or lead cross functional teams with little supervision or oversight. Desire to work in the field in challenging environments to collect data for RCA or system upgrade validation. Ability to travel frequently (Up to 20% travel) Technical Skills Ability to perform and review advanced mathematical calculations and control algorithms. Ability to simply and effectively communicate complex concepts. Ability to read and understand plans, specifications, drawings, and documents relating to engineering and construction, including one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, and wiring diagrams. Ability to write simple yet thorough test plans and coordinate through execution by anticipating potential problems and implementing required controls. Ability to quickly assess emergency situations and requirements and to develop and implement appropriate action plans. Ability to work around energized equipment under proper lock-out, tag-out, and other safety procedures. Ability to occasionally perform physical requirements including standing, sitting, walking, kneeling, twisting, reaching, and climbing at project locations in order to inspect equipment or collect information.
