Northrop Grumman Space Systems - Propulsions Division is currently seeking an LAS Chief Engineer to provide leadership to our LAS (Launch Abort System) Project Engineering team in our Promontory, UT offices. The LAS Chief Engineer will have overarching technical authority for the LAS motor designed to support the SLS manifest.

Role Description & Responsibilities:
The LAS Chief Engineer is responsible for all functional and performance aspects of the Launch Abort Motor scope. The Chief Engineer is also responsible for the coordination and technical leadership for the LAS Project Engineer(s). This position oversees the entire motor element design, development, qualification, certification/compliance, including performance-impact process changes, and production technical issues management and resolution, the latter being the forward focus areas. The selected candidate will chair the LAS Sr MRB and is the technical leadership member of the LAS program Change Control Board.

Responsibilities include:
  • Provide overall technical direction for LAS motor build and flight readiness assuring consistency and compliance to the qualification baseline, including:
    • Motor technical change control with any qualification testing and analysis updates
    • Technical issue review and resolution and Sr MRB adjudication
    • Assured flight readiness for LAS delivered products to support the SLS manifest
    • Technical coordination and communication; focal point for customer interactions
  • Work with members of the LAS program leadership team to provide consistent technical direction and support customer interactions and reviews
  • Provide for overall S&E related LAS technical planning, workload allocation and equalization
  • Provide direction and execution leadership for LAS Project Engineer(s)
  • Function in a cooperative environment with LAS program manager counterpart.
    • Risk review and mitigation
    • PMR, LAS IPT and LM/NASA/ATK Working Group support
Experience Requirements:
  • Experience in multiple motor design, project or analysis disciplines
    • Nozzle, PLI, case, final assembly/RMA or test design
    • Thermal, structural, CFD, or ballistic analysis
    • System-level and component Loads and Environments
  • General design, analyses, manufacturing, and inspection knowledge, and experience for complete motor system
  • Technical project planning, overall logic development and demonstrated accountability for plan management
  • Demonstrated investigation and problem resolution skills
  • Ability to lead and motivate diverse and cross-organization team members
  • Systems/Project engineering tools/practices general knowledge
• Candidate must have a minimum of 14 years ' experience in design/analysis/project roles.
• Candidate must have a minimum of 2 years of supervisory or project management experience.
  • Ability to travel (if applicable): Travel expectation of 2% -7%
Experience Preferred:
  • Advanced engineering degree (MS preferred)
  • Prior functional engineering leadership, project leadership, or program manager experience
  • Directly-related LAS design and/or project engineering leadership experience
  • Significant experience with, and knowledge of, the MRB processes directly related to LAS
  • Significant experience in problem investigation and corrective action development

Education/Certifications
  • • BS degree in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering minimum, 14 Years with BS; 12 Years with Masters; 9 Years with PhD
Salary Range: $149,700 USD - $224,500 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
