Description

Shapiro Auctions, a boutique auction house focusing on International and Russian fine and decorative art, seeks a self-motivated intern for minimum period of three months. The position offers a flexible schedule, but the successful candidate should be able to commit 8 hours a day, with a minimum of 2 days a (work) week . The small size of the company will ensure that you will have an opportunity to experience every aspect of running an auction gallery and partake in the process of putting on an art auction from start to finish (everything from office support to assisting with cataloging and photography).

This is for a cataloguing position, meaning you will be working hands-on with a collection of manuscripts, books, and photographs, writing descriptions of the items for our sales. Our full-time senior cataloguers will help you learn the ins and outs -- a great opportunity to gain experience in this field. This position also will involve using a camera to photograph some of the manuscripts -- this is fairly straightforward and easily learned (do not stress if you do not have photography experience, though some previous experience is ideal).

REQUIREMENTS:

-fluency in second language such as Russian or Mandarin highly desirable, but not necessary

-Study in one of the following (or closely related) areas: Art History, Marketing, or Graphic Design

-must be detail-oriented

-a demonstrated interest in fine and decorative arts

-proficiency in Microsoft Suite (Photoshop and graphic design skills a plus)

-ability to thrive in a fast-paced, tight-knit environment

-ability to multi-task and deal with shifting priorities

-professional phone and email manner

-a sense of humor

Please note that the internship is unpaid , but it is possible to arrange for academic credit. Lunch and transportation (if needed) provided.

Please send your cover letter and resume or CV to: info at shapiroauctions dot com with "Internship Application" in the subject line. No phone calls or walk-ins, please.

PLEASE NOTE: All members of Shapiro Auctions staff are fully vaccinated and we request that our interns similarly be fully vaccinated for the safety of our team members and customers.
