Smith Gardens has an exciting opportunity for a IPM Technician to join our team at our Bellingham, WA site.

Smith Gardens is a Wholesale Nursery company that is headquartered in Bellingham, Washington, and has been family owned for over 100 years, with facilities in three states. The Bellingham facility, established in 1901, is the original site of Smith Gardens. The site sits on 40 acres of greenhouse and outside growing area.

JOB FUNCTION: The IPM Technician is responsible for managing pests in the greenhouses, fields, and non-crop areas. The IPM Technician coordinates pest information with the Growing team and applies crop chemical, spray, and feed applications

JOB DUTIES:

Complete spray applications
Review scouting and sticky card data collected by the team and see that proper treatments are being made when needed.
Plan and direct action to be taken to keep plants and property clean
Ensure that chemical application equipment is operating correctly
Take monthly inventory of chemicals and enter adjustments in the software system (Picas or Sage)
Prepare and submit samples to laboratories for identification as needed
Regularly meet with Head Grower to review crop health and department needs
Meet with sales reps, consultants, and other technical advisors to ensure that we are on the leading edge of IPM.
Continue to stay current on best IPM practices through workshops, conferences, and other means
Maintain growing department chemical and BCA expenses within set annual budget
Develop and train growing team on IPM practices including spraying, scouting, pest identification and beneficial insects
Staying current with changes in laws and regulations as it applies to WPS and pesticide worker and handler safety to ensure WPS compliance and pesticide safety site wide
Inventory control - Ordering and inventorying of chemicals and PPE for the site.Working with grower supervisors to make sure products are being used in an effective way.
Forecast chemical and BCAs for the following year, for the purpose of bulk buying to drive price and overall costs
Effectively communicates needs and concerns to other department leadership
Keep work area clean and organized
Operate mobile equipment
Conduct yourself with high level integrity, adhering to Company standards and values
Promote a safe work environment, upholding company safety policies and procedures
Ability to cross train in other areas and serve as backup for other positions when necessary
Attend and participate in meetings and trainings as assigned
Train Staff when necessary

SKILLS AND ABILTIES:

Able to communicate in verbal and in writing, in person, and via phone or radio
A valid Private Pesticide Applicator's License must be obtained within 60 days of starting this position and kept current
Able to wear a respirator for extended periods of time
Basic computer and math skills and some mechanical aptitude
Able to work independently, self-motivated, and flexible
Organizational skills and able to coordinate work with other teams
Positive attitude and eagerness to help Smith Gardens achieve its goals
Performs other related duties as needed

Strong analytical and interpersonal skills
Ability to communicate effectively

QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION:

0-1-year experience in the horticulture setting
Strong experience and skills computer programs, emphasis with databases.
Intermediate Math skills as needed
Must be 18+ years old
Must work well in a team environment
Wiling to work long days or weeks
Must be Detailed and safety oriented
Ability to read and write in English
Able to operate mobile equipment

PHYSICAL REQUIRMENTS:

Able to be cleared to wear a full-face and half-mask respirator
Work long hours as needed. Including weekends and holidays.
Continuously walk, stand, squat, kneel (and remain working below knee-level) as well as reaching overhead, and from side to side for long periods of time and wear PPE in greenhouse settings.
Work indoors and outdoors, in seasonal temperatures and conditions
Lift up to 50 pounds in an environment that is often hot.
