A Brief Summary of This Position:
Opportunity to join a successful team of dedicated professionals based in Birmingham, Alabama in a market leading business supplying highly-engineered, fabricated metal products to the transportation infrastructure industry.
Summary
This position requires very little travel or construction site visits. The engineering team supplies professional expertise for highway construction contractors across the United States and for the on-site metal fabrication plant. The companyâ s primary focus is on engineering and fabricating steel structures. The company believes strongly in teamwork and cross-functional collaboration among all team members.
Essential Functions:
ï Determine information from construction plans and field surveys.
ï Detail structure drawings for fabrication and field assembly.
ï Check fabrication drawings and field assembly drawings for accuracy and completeness per project specifications.
ï Create structure and foundation designs and drawings utilizing company proprietary design programs.
ï Coordinates with designers and project managers daily to ensure drawings meet project specifications.
ï Coordinates with key shop personnel to establish best practices on the fabrication drawings.
ï Develop working knowledge of specifications: ASTM, AASHTO, AWS D1.1, AISC and various State DOT standards.
ï Quality of work is top priority.
ï This position reports to the Drafting Manager and has (0) direct reports and (0) indirect reports.
ï This role does not require travel (internationally/domestically).
Other Important Details about the Role:
ï Extremely organized and self-motivated, able to manage and prioritize multiple concurrent and competing challenges and projects.
ï Effective communication and relationship building skills.
ï Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
ï Mostly 2D drafting for fabrication and field assembly of structures. This position may become a team lead for future 3D modeling practices and procedures for the department.
ï This position is an exempt (salaried) role.
Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):
ï Preferred Bachelorâ s Degree with 2+ years of experience in a related engineering field (cell tower, utility structure design, etc.)
ï Associates degree in engineering or drafting related field with 3+ years of experience or 5+ years of direct experience in this field.
ï Regards quality and document control processes as key job functions.
ï Drafting in AutoCAD (2021) â LISP programming is a major plus
ï Utilize MS Excel daily (understanding of Visual Basic Applications for Macros a plus)
ï Ability to analyze and troubleshoot Business Information Systems
ï Daily use of MS Outlook
Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:
ï Experience in engineering and materials fabrication environment, particularly in design or detailing, is highly preferable
ï Knowledge of Land Surveying and Standard Drafting Practices
ï Experience with 3D modeling (CREO, Tekla Structures, SolidWorks, Inventor, etc.)
ï Working knowledge of weld symbols.
ï STAAD, LPile, MathCAD, AutoCAD, CREO
ï AASHTO Standard Specifications for Highway Bridges, AASHTO Standard Specifications for Structural Supports for Highway Signs, Luminaires and Traffic Signals, ACI 318 Code, AWS Codes, ASTM Standards
ï AISC and various state DOT standard specifications

Working Environment and Physical Efforts: Can be used for the majority of administrative positions
Work is typically performed in an office setting. The incumbent is regularly required to sit for extended periods of time, as well as talk and listen on the phone and in personal conversations or meetings. Environment is fast paced and demanding most of the time. No travel requirements for this position. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms while working in the office with various files and forms and while working on the computer. The employee is occasionally required to move about the office. Incumbent must utilize proper ergonomic safeguards such as monitor height and positions, keyboard location and height and proper wrists rests. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds in working with large files, binders, and computer equipment.
