Overview / Responsibilities

Wood is currently seeking an Instrumentation & Controls Engineer to join our Life Sciences team within our Philadelphia office to develop life-changing and in many cases, life-saving solutions for our clients.

While this position will report into our Philadelphia location, we have a hybrid office with employees around the United States.

On a global scale, Wood serves the Life Sciences, Oil & Gas, Federal, Infrastructure, Manufacturing, Mining, and Power Industries. Our Philadelphia office has become the Center of Excellence for our global Life Sciences network, providing full-service pharmaceutical and biotechnology engineering, design, procurement, and project management services.

We're looking for an energetic, self-motivated individual with the ability to execute all phases of project design. Project sizes will vary and will include both existing building improvements and new construction. Excellent oral and written communication skills, decision making capabilities, problem resolution skills, and a sense of initiative are important for this industry. The skills required for this position and the responsibilities listed below will come with time, but a positive attitude and willingness to learn is crucial for this role.

Responsibilities:
  • Work with an instrumentation & controls (I&C) design team through all phases of design: feasibility & concept development, preliminary design, detailed design, and construction documentation.
  • Assist in control system philosophy and control system architecture development in coordination with client and process requirements.
  • Develop I&C design documents for biotech and pharmaceutical facilities, including:
    • Control panel layouts and wiring diagrams
    • Instrument Indexes and I/O Lists
    • Instrument Datasheets
    • Instrument location plans
    • Instrument installation details
    • Network System Architecture drawings
    • Instrument field wiring diagrams
    • Point-of-use panel wiring diagrams
    • Solenoid panel layouts
    • Segmentation drawings
    • Control system sizing calculations
    • Control loop diagrams
  • Coordinate with process and mechanical engineers to generate instrument data sheets, develop piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) and equipment specifications.
  • Provide technical guidance and direction to project team.
  • Coordinate with multiple disciplines in 2-D and 3-D environments for panel locations, in-line instruments, and power to control panels.
  • Prepare specifications for panel fabrication and instrumentation and control system requirements for packaged equipment.
  • Coordinate with systems integrator.
  • Perform field surveys and evaluate condition of existing equipment and systems.
  • Review submittals and shop drawings.
  • Respond to construction Requests for Information (RFIs), develop final construction documents including plans, specifications, schedules, and details.
  • Work with Construction Management Team to remove roadblocks during all phases of a project.
  • Prepare specifications for I&C equipment.
  • Prepare I&C design criteria and basis of design documents.
  • Help to establish a culture of technical excellence through role modelling and communicating expectations.
  • Establish effective working relations with colleagues, clients, and officials.



Skills / Qualifications

  • BS/MS in either Mechanical, Electrical, or Chemical Engineering.
  • No industry experience expected or required.
  • Hybrid Working Office Environment (employee can select days working from home or from the office - fully remote options also open to consideration)
  • Preferred computer skills: MS Office, AutoCAD, and Revit 3D modeling
  • Flexibility to travel (max of 10% annually)
  • Willing to cross-discipline train and assist in electrical/mechanical/process design is preferred.
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) Certificate preferred.
