Head of Engineering / Director of Engineering - Healthcare AI startup

Vienna, VA (Washington D.C. area). You can work from home up to 2x/week.

The company's product involves enterprise SaaS, analytics, big data, healthcare, and life sciences.

The company has about 15 people and 4 engineers and is expecting to double in size in the next year.

The company will pay up to $220k in salary, plus equity which could be lucrative.

Time spent will be roughly as follows:

- 70% internal-facing - managing the Engineering team and leading development initiatives to execute against the product roadmap.

- 20% hands-on - doing hands-on architecture, design, coding, and applying advanced technology knowhow.

- 10% external-facing - providing technical guidance and expertise to our client implementations, sales / marketing efforts, partner / channel initiatives, and general thought leadership opportunities.

Job Responsibilities:

- Owning and managing the development of the product.

- Managing 4 engineers, 2 data scientists, and 3 QA Engineers. The expectation is to double the time in the next year.

- Using Python on the backend. The tech stack includes Spark, elasticsearch, MongoDB, and AWS.

- Providing mentorship, coaching, and technical oversight to team members.

- Communicating and interacting with internal stakeholders to meet business objectives; working w/ Product Development to support customer and market needs.

- Leading architecture efforts including design, software evaluations, and integration activities.

- Engaging in production of code deployments, code reviews, and monitoring.

- Liaising with Product Development, Sales/Marketing, Customer Success, and Support teams to implement use cases, fix bugs, and share enhancement opportunities and provide overall technical subject matter expertise for the product.

- Collaborating with Product Development and Sales/Marketing teams to develop the overall product roadmap strategy.

- Collaborating with channel partners to share product expertise and support joint initiatives.

- Leading innovation opportunities around cloud capabilities, data ingest, NLP pipeline, machine learning capabilities, etc.

- Supporting and enforcing client and industry security requirements as it relates to the product.

- Serving as an overall SME for the product and other Big Data / Open Source ecosystem technologies.

- Leading overall technical quality control, UAT and validation efforts.

- Contributing to knowledge transfer and training activities including training content development.

Qualifications:

- Startup experience.

- Deep technology expertise in software architecture, design and development.

- 8+ years of professional engineering experience.

- Experience with Scala or Python.

- Leadership experience as a software lead managing a team of at least 5 (preferably 10+) developers.

- Expertise with Apache Spark and associated Spark components (Streaming, SQL, ML, etc).

- Experience with cloud architectures and large data processing.

- Ability to set up and manage multi-node clusters on the cloud.

- Ability to integrate and orchestrate Cloud / Big Data ecosystem / Open Source technologies.

- Hands-on expertise w/ cloud technologies including understanding of all major cloud providers (Google Cloud Platform, Amazon Web Services, MS Azure).

- Expertise with Kubernetes and Docker.

- Keen understanding of API development best practices.

- Familiarity with DW/ETL/BI solutions and implementations.

- Familiarity with system administration and scripting tools such as bash, Python and/or Perl.

- Familiarity with system administration of Hadoop / Big Data ecosystem components including installation, upgrades, and security.

- Understanding of various data storage concepts (in-memory, NoSQL, columnar, etc.).

- Specialized skills in either data visualization or analytics.

- Excellent communication/interpersonal skills including both written and verbal skills; experience speaking at conferences, meetups, or other technical events.

- BS/MS in Computer Science or related field.

- Expertise in one of these industry domain areas: healthcare (best), finance, government.

Nice to have:

- Expertise in Healthcare IT, associated healthcare standards (example: FHIR), and the processing of healthcare data at scale such as EHR, claims, imaging and genomics.

- Experience with NLP.

- Experience with event processing / real-time streaming concepts and technologies - Kafka, Kinesis, or other similar CEP / data ingest / messaging solutions.

- Expertise with Data Science, Machine Learning and algorithmic development.

- Contributed to / committed to an Open Source software project, participated in an OS user/dev group, and/or created technical blogs.

- Experience as an Industry speaker and/or author; demonstrated thought leadership: authored blogs, speaker at conferences, open source contributor.
