What Your Job Will Be Like
We are seeking a highly motivated Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H) coordinator with experience implementing ES&H requirements and working in a complex technical environment. You will play a key role as you help build a strong and healthy safety culture at the Labs. In this position, you are responsible for performing a variety of environmental, safety, and occupational health related functions. This is a fast-paced job that offers a great deal of ES&H project diversity.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
Partner with staff and management to implement and assure ES&H performance and compliance with corporate safety initiatives and regulatory requirements.
Perform technical analyses and evaluations and advise management on practices to resolve ES&H performance and compliance issues.
Develop, implement, and communicate organization specific ES&H policies, processes, hazard controls and tools to help staff and management improve safety practices and meet performance expectations.
Document and report staff and management concerns, findings, non-compliance issues and significant information in corporate data systems and through appropriate management channels.
Perform laboratory and work area walk throughs to evaluate environmental and safety conditions. Identify, record and communicate areas of concern.
Facilitate incident investigations to reveal root causes and required corrective actions.
Provide support during both external and internal ES&H audits and assessments.
Cultivate effective communications and relationships with organization leadership, ES&H organization, and ES&H Coordinator community.
Contribute to corporate and division ES&H initiatives.
Qualifications We Require
Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (such as a technical field or an ES&H field) plus five or more years of relevant experience; or equivalent combination of relevant education and relevant experience
Proficiency with common office software, such as the Microsoft Office Suite (PowerPoint, Excel, Word), and the ability to quickly learn and use a variety of ES&H tools
Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q security clearance
Qualifications We Desire
Master's degree in STEM, ES&H or other relevant field
Professional certification in a relevant field (e.g., Associate Safety Professional, Certified Safety Professional)
Knowledge or training in worker safety and health programs
Hands-on experience with chemical and engineering laboratory practices
Understanding of applicable OSHA, EPA, NEPA, and DOE regulations
Knowledge and experience in performing occupational health, safety, and environmental management related assessments and the development of corrective actions, particularly in a research and development setting
Proven understanding of industrial safety standards, equipment, and practices, including but not limited to the following: electrical, laser, pressure, hazardous materials, radiological and explosives
Strong customer focus and ability to work well in a team focused environment.
Demonstrated ability to meet and adapt to changing deadlines and priorities
Active DOE L or Q clearance

Department 8517 provides Occupational Health and Safety Engineering support services to the SNL/CA site and personnel and includes ES&H Coordinators, Facilities ES&H safety Inspectors, Industrial Hygiene, and Safety Engineering. Department personnel support and facilitate the implementation of ES&H requirements and processes and assist in the identification and analysis of any hazards, threats and risks which may create an unsafe worksite. We collaborate to translate corporate policy requirements into line implementation plans and to formulate engineering and administrative controls to mitigate hazards, threats and risks.
