Description of Job About the Work Unit This position is located in CDOT's Region 4 Sterling Engineering Residency. This residency provides project design, construction and materials support to R4. It ensures that projects which improve and maintain the transportation system within the Region are designed and constructed in a safe and cost effective manner, including materials utilized in the projects. About the Position The Engineer Physical Sciences Assistant II (EPSA II) will assist with the supportive duties for the work unit supervisor in both construction, preconstruction, and materials testing for transportation projects. This will include but not limited to: surveying, design review and support, testing of materials incorporated into projects, assuring compliance of plans and specifications, and determining the quantities for interim progress payments. This position will also assist in the design of construction plans by automated drafting, gathering and checking of project quantities, and geometrics. Position will perform routine materials testing and inspection independently, including collecting test materials, running appropriate tests, and conducting analyses; complex testing and inspection will be done under the guidance and assistance of an EPST or an Engineer. Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following: + Assist with the visual inspections of contractor's work, materials used, and methods employed by the contractor to confirm compliance with project plans and specifications; + Provide information so the project engineer can complete all documentation in accordance with the CDOT Construction Manual; + Assist with routine analysis to check applicability, accuracy, and reasonableness of data; + Assist with collecting field measurements that will be used to generate pay quantities for Contractor's work; + Assist with the execution physical tests, as per the Materials Manual, on materials to be incorporated into a project to conform and comply with the plans and specifications; + Gather and document results of physical tests and materials certification for incorporation into the project records; + Will conduct tests such as gradations, asphalt content, air and slump, proctors and the like to ensure conformance with the specifications; + Utilize computer software programs relevant to design and construction of projects, and for receiving and transmitting inter-departmental communications to include Microsoft Suite, Google, Microstation/InRoads, SiteManager, LIMS, Ashpalt03; + Check documentation and calculations using appropriate manuals as guidelines for standardization; + Learn to review preliminary project design plans and documentation using appropriate manuals to ensure completeness, accuracy and constructability of design, quantity verifications and deficiencies; + Assist with documenting the quantities for inclusion in the project records; + Assist in Project Finals by checking all 266's, 305's, CMO's and completing the "As Built" construction plans; + Verify all materials certifications as complete and valid, and test results are complete for materials finals documentation on assigned projects; + Learn how to complete field surveys for compiling field data to be incorporated into the design of transportation facilities; transfer collected data to computers by interfacing with computer programs; edit and translate the data into a usable format for the design phase of construction; + Learn how to complete surveying necessary for the construction of transportation facilities including but not limited to: determine location and elevation of major and minor structures, set slope stakes to define the limits of new roadbed, establish horizontal and vertical control; + Other job duties as assigned. Work Environment: + Your schedule will primarily be 8:00 am - 4:30 pm work hours, Monday-Friday, but we are flexible to meet your work/life balance needs while ensuring CDOT business needs are met + Approximately 50% spent in the field, 50% spent in the office + Work days/hours may change depending on the project + Travel outside the office is required for project meetings, field inspections and trainings in locations within the state. Overnight travel is a requirement for the position + Required to operate CDOT vehicles Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights Minimum Qualifications + High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) AND + At least one year of experience o f continuous full-time experience assisting engineers, scientists, or technicians on a construction site, materials sampling and testing, site surveying or project design. Substitution + Completion of engineering, mathematics, or other relevant coursework from an accredited, non-correspondence college or university may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required experience. If using education to substitute for some of the required experience, you must submit a legible copy of your unofficial college transcript(s) or credential evaluation report with your application. Transcripts from colleges or universities outside of the United States must be assessed for U.S. equivalency by a NACES educational credential evaluation service.
