Job Overview

Job Description: Job Tasks + Set up and operate conventional or computer numerically controlled machine tools such as profile grinders, surface grinders, tool grinders, lathes, mills, stamping press, metal forming equipment, or otherwise to shape parts to prescribed dimensions and finishes. + Set up and operate brazing, welding, and cutting equipment. + Program computer numerically controlled machine tools with Siemens and Fanuc conversational controls by entering instructions including zero and reference points, setting tool registers, offsets, compensation, and conditional switches. + Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, or materials onto machines. + Monitor the feed and speed of machines during the machining process and adjust when needed. + Use measuring instruments such as calipers, gauge blocks, micrometers, and dial indicators to verify dimensions of first-run part, sample workpieces, and finished parts for conformance to specifications, adhering to internal standards. + Study sample parts, blueprints, drawings, and engineering information to fabricate products within tolerances. + Select materials to be used when applicable from a range of metals and alloys, based on properties such as hardness and heat tolerance. + Apply knowledge of shop mechanics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures. + Respond to problems by reviewing machine setup and process. Able to identify root causes and adjust as needed. Observe and listen to operating machines or equipment to diagnose machine malfunctions and to determine need for adjustments or repairs. + Maintain machine tools in proper operational condition. + Review assigned work requests, blueprints or other instructions to determine operational methods or sequences. + Ability to communicate accurate time estimates to supervisor. + Exchange information with colleagues, conferring with lead, if needed, to ensure that programs or set-up will function properly, and that output will meet specifications. + Communicate proficiently to supervisors and co-workers by telephone, e-mail, or in person. + Works effectively in team environment requiring minimal supervision. Self-starting individual. + Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities.
