Job Overview

Electrician I Installs and repairs electrical systems, circuits, apparatus, and electrical components of machinery and equipment. Inspects, tests, and troubleshoots electrical equipment, lighting, and power circuits. Isolates defects in wiring, circuit breakers, fuses, switches, sockets, and other elements and replaces faulty circuit breakers, fuses, switches, sockets, and other elements of electrical systems. Interprets blueprints, electrical schematics, sketches and drawings of electrical circuits. Calculates electrical loads, wire sizes, and lengths. Mounts motors, transformers, and lighting fixtures into position and completes circuits according to diagram specifications. Repairs magnetic starters and remote start-stop stations; operates and maintains high and low voltage switches; and installs rigid, thin wall, and flexible conduit. Wires circuits and cleans and tightens low voltage switch gears. Assists in the maintenance and renovation of electrical service. May train others. Performs related work as assigned. Essential Job Functions: Assembles, installs, repairs, and maintains electrical equipment. Plans, schedules, and oversees building repair, renovation, or restoration projects. Performs repairs and renovations to modernize a building (or system) or adapt it to new uses. Examines structures and evaluates work to be done, selects best methods of performing work, and inspects finished project to ensure work meets needs and standards. Trains employees on electrical-related equipment, procedures, and safety practices. Completes paperwork and oversees a record-keeping system. Maintains inventory of shop equipment, supplies, materials and components. Requisitions needed supplies and equipment. Communicates, orally and in writing, to facilitate maintenance-related business and promote productive work relationships. May inspect maintenance work performed by contractors to ensure contract compliance. Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned Knowledge Skills Abilities: Knowledge of general principles and theory of electricity and of safety regulations. Ability to make maintenance and/or electrical repairs, to diagnose malfunctioning units, to maintain records, to communicate effectively orally and in writing, and to train others. Skill in the use of hand and power tools, and specific tools of the electrical trade, such as, volt / amp meters, conduit benders, and other electrical trade tools and equipment. Registration or Licensure Requirements: Master or Journeyman's electrical licensure is generally preferred. Must possess a valid Texas Driver's License and continued maintenance of same. Initial Selection Criteria: Standard Senior High School diploma or GED equivalent is required. 2-4 years of experience working in the electrical trade. Experience with electrical blueprints, schematics. Experience with communicating effectively orally and in writing. Experience with how to properly explain and produce evidence of knowledge of electrical theory. Experience working with motor, pumps, switches, fuses, circuit breakers, sockets, and other electrical elements.
