What Your Job Will Be Like

We are seeking a highly motivated Safety Engineer to review and support integrating safety systems, associated support equipment, facilities, functional specifications, and operations to ensure hazards are mitigated and in compliance with safety and health regulations. We are looking for an individual with a passion for safety and a strong technical background safely implementing to the latest editions of Codes and Standards.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

Perform on-site audits/assessments/walkthroughs of operational areas to determine effectiveness of safety programs, including electrical safety, Hazardous energy control (Lock-Out-Tag-out), construction safety, rigging/crane operations, traffic safety, seismic safety, pressure safety, industrial ergonomics.
Coach and educate leaders and employees on safe work practices and to proactively identify safety issues and establish corrective actions and improvements.
Develop and conduct training in key safety program areas including electrical safety, Lock Out/Tag out, and hazard identification and control.
Develop safety documents, as required, to support line customer and test and operational requirements.
Independently analyze and recommend safety criteria in system design, equipment and procedures to control or eliminate hazards.
Participate in accident investigations involving injuries and damage and assist in identification of causes and corrective actions.
Understand applicable federal, state and other occupational safety and health requirements, including 10 CFR 851 requirements.
Support the Committee on Electrical Safety and solicit ideas for feedback and improvement.
Participate with the DOE Electrical Safety community.
Assess electrical PPE and recommend changes as needed, train employees on PPE, and ensure compliance with PPE standards.
Qualifications We Require

Bachelor's degree in science, technology, engineering, or math, or other relevant field plus five or more years of experience applying safety and health standards; or equivalent experience
Current certification or ability to obtain and maintain certifications in worker safety and health programs (such as CSP)
Demonstrated knowledge of industrial safety
Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance
Qualifications We Desire

Certified Electrical Safety Compliance Professional (CESCP), Registered Professional Electrical Engineer License (PE), and/or Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
Experience developing and delivering instructional courses focused on electrical safety and NFPA 70 and 70E
Experience managing hazardous energy control program (LOTO)
Knowledge of regulations and code pertaining to electrical safety and procedures to qualify equipment that has not been tested by a nationally recognized testing laboratory
Working knowledge in one or more of the following areas: Electrical safety, pressure safety, explosive safety, construction safety, firearms safety, traffic safety, cranes, rigging, fall protection, scaffolds.
Demonstrated experience managing complex, safety issues to resolution in an R&D environment.
Understanding of DOE orders/codes/standards.
Strong customer service focus and ability to work well in team focused environment.
Excellent verbal and written communications skills
Active DOE L or Q security clearance

The Department provides Occupational Health and Safety Engineering support services to the SNL/CA site and personnel. Support includes: radiation protection, industrial hygiene, chemical management, and safety engineering.
