Job Overview
JOB SUMMARY
The Technology & Breakthrough Innovation (T&BI) team drives the creation of new product solutions for S&C's customers by exploiting new technologies and enabling breakthrough product development for the fast-evolving intelligent grid ( ). Technically sophisticated on the inside, S&C's future systems must deliver unparalleled user experience, outstanding long-term value, and profitable revenue streams. This role supports the development and commercialization of new products and technologies using specialized laboratory and testing facilities.
The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

Actively contribute in a multidisciplinary engineering team to develop new medium voltage switchgear technology.

Analyze existing and proposed designs and processes to make recommendations that optimize for performance, consistency, and cost effectiveness.

Lead material investigations to seek root cause(s) for design performance using formal problem-solving techniques with minimal supervisory guidance.

Provide expert opinions on material selection, specifications, and processes for specific vacuum applications.

Self-starting investigations to seek root causes for design performance using formal problem-solving techniques with minimal supervisory guidance.

Develop processes suitable for high vacuum environments, and scaling such processes to manufacturing levels.

Conceptualize, design, prototype, build, and test physical prototypes.

Pursuing assignments with a "can do" attitude in a fast paced environment.
To select this job as one of interest to you, at a minimum, you must have the following:
-
BS or higher in Metallurgy, Materials Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, or Chemical Engineering (or related education), and at least 3 years' experience performing metallurgical analysis or equivalent education (Master's/PhD experience)

Familiarity with stainless steels and nonferrous metals, especially copper, chromium, silver, and their processing.

Familiarity with vacuum brazing, powder metallurgy, machining, stamping, and electrolytic plating manufacturing processes. Experience with all would be a plus.

Familiarity with VAM (vacuum arc melting), and metal vapor deposition techniques not because they are directly used, but because the processes have a lot of similarities to the products being designed.

Familiarity with industries with similar cleanroom requirements (e.g. chip processing, particle accelerators) would be a plus.

Experience using common metallurgical analysis tools, such as optical microscopy, SEM/EDS, metallography, XRF spectroscopy, as well as mechanical testing, such as tensile, hardness, and impact testing

Proven track record of substantive contributions, both analytical and conceptual, to new product developments

Strong skills in identifying risks, developing mitigation strategies, alternative solutions, and resolving issues independently and in collaboration with multidisciplinary team

Ability to manage time and multiple tasks with a strong sense of urgency

Participated in FMEA and DfMEA events

Ability to combine disparate ideas into unique solutions

Strong verbal (presentation) and written (reports) skills

3D CAD experience and experience with design engineering activities
