Job Details


Essential Job Functions


Lead the vehicle engineering team comprised of systems, safety, compliance, simulation, and process excellence to drive the design and development of automotive electrification systems for Class 8 truck applications


Lead and guide engineering managers to ensure on-time delivery per program milestones


Partner with customers and marketing team to generate system and sub-system requirements and specifications to meet fuel economy, performance, NVH, safety, compliance, system weight and cost targets


Lead simulation and modeling including algorithm development for system optimization, component sizing and fuel economy


Develop future powertrain architectures and control strategies


Guide and manage analysis efforts used to support design decisions including FEA, thermal modeling, and simulation.


Develop and manage performance & cost models and technology roadmaps


Drive value optimization and quality improvement programs


Make decisions in the areas of design and project risk trade-offs that impact program cost or delivery without sacrifice of quality expectations


Document applicable global commercial vehicle regulations to drive compliance with NHTSA, EPA, CARB, and other regulatory bodies


Lead product certification process and ensuring product meets emissions, FMVSS and OBD requirements.


Develop and maintain the required compliance and certification documentation


Drive continuous product improvement, reducing production cost, creating product variants for adjacent markets and the overall continued success of the product deployed in customers' hands


Develop engineering product development and design release process, drive timeline development and conduct internal engineering gate reviews for leadership approvals


Lead the creation and implementation of CAD and PLM roadmap across organization and support integration effort with ERP and other organizational tools


Lead product cost and weight estimation, tracking and reduction effort supported by should cost analysis, tear down analysis and competitive benchmarking techniques


Lead the creation of key APQP documents including FMEAs and DVP&Rs to drive product reliability and robustness


Actively mentor and coach engineering team members in various areas including design, simulation, and product validation


Support the development of company product roadmaps supported by extensive industry and product knowledge


Define and implement strategies for synergies among the programs adopting a modular approach, minimizing complexity, and leveraging technology/architecture re-use


Work with suppliers and strategic partners to exchange technical information to drive the product roadmap


Provide strategic design direction to the team to ensure that Hyliion is making the correct design decisions balancing key product attributes such as performance and cost


Job Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities Requirements


Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing


Experience in globally recognized Quality systems and LEAN process methods


Knowledgeable with automotive design software tools for Project Data/Lifecycle Management, CAD design, CFD thermal and FEA analysis


Working knowledge of NHTSA, EPA, CARB and emissions standards and requirements


Good understanding on global regulatory subjects including active and passive safety, and environmental regulations applicable to hybrid and electric vehicles


Proven experience with formal requirements management and traceability with intense focus on systems engineering principles


Experience in powertrain and battery system specification development and component selection


Experience in the automotive sector and understanding of automotive systems, program management, and industry standards


Track record of improving quality and on time delivery across the engineering organization


Proven experience in planning, organizing, and maintaining relationships with internal customer organizations


Automotive industry and associated toolset expertise (FMEAs, DVP&Rs)


Experience working with cross-functional teams to develop product technology roadmaps


Required Qualifications


Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering


15+ Years of Engineering Experience


10+ years of product development experience in powertrain systems with a strong understanding of powertrain, electric motors, controllers, high voltage battery systems, and control systems


Experience in automotive industry


Expertise in high voltage and associated safety protocols


Expertise in vehicle electrification, powertrain and vehicle certification standards, drivetrain, battery technologies, electrical and wiring systems, NVH, instrumentation and methodologies


Preferred Qualifications


Master's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering


Strong understanding of Class-8 trucks, their sub-systems and application requirements including vehicle controls, powertrain integration, air conditioning and electrical systems


Experience in CFD, EMC or Thermal Analysis


Experienced in Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of structural systems


Experience in the automotive sector and understanding of automotive systems, program management, and industry standards


Experience in ISO 26262 safety standards and vehicle safety systems


Experience in vehicle controls, calibration, and software


Other Qualifications


Strong follow-through and self-starting nature


Ability to communicate with customers (internal and external) in an effective and positive way both written and verbally, to address their needs promptly and to follow through on commitments


Ability to understand and follow complex verbal and written instructions


Position will involve travel (10-15% of time) to visit, work with, and evaluate engineering providers and hardware suppliers


Ability to work well in a high-paced environment, set and meet appropriate deadlines
