The Director of Global Optical Engineering will have overall responsibility of the optical designs performed by optical/mechanical engineers and engineering aides in the Engineering department, you will be part of the Global Product Development team working with Electrical, Mechanical and Software Engineering.

The candidate will perform the management and hands on opto-mechanical design of lasers, delivery systems and opto-mechanical systems. In addition, they will provide technical guidance for the System Architects that are responsible for dedicate product lines.

In this role, you will be expected to be some hands-on, as well as manage a Team of Engineers and lead the development activities regarding new product development and sustaining products. Working with other R&D functions, this role manages and maintains the development processes and delivery strategies for the opto-mechanical engineering systems. The candidate will interact with various groups across the organization from Quality, NPI, LCE (Life Cycle Engineering), Systems, UX/UI, Service and Regulatory in the specification, design, development, integration, test, and support of integrated laser and software systems.

Essential Job Functions

• Manage the optical engineers and optical technicians insuring on-time product delivery.
• Design and test laser heads, resonators, optical and opto-mechanical systems for high energy medical lasers.
• Design and test fiber optic delivery systems for lasers
• Perform laser system performance measurements such as beam profile, energy stability, thermal and mechanical), pulse width, wavelength, and beam propagation.
• Research new optical concepts and design techniques to determine if they are applicable for Candela products.
• Supervise work of several optical engineers and senior opto-mechanical engineering aides or technicians.
• Write assembly procedures for the designed systems and support manufacturing in pilot builds and troubleshooting.
• Write Engineering Change Orders on existing products to improve designs and correct problems.

Knowledge/Educational Requirements

• Requires BS degree in Optical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Physics and a minimum of 15 years' experience in optical design. (MS degree preferred)
• Working knowledge of Zemax Ray Tracing program or equivalent.
• Experience with mechanical drafting program preferred
• Advanced knowledge of FDA, IEC and UL standards relating to medical devices
• HALT - High Acceleration Life tests, since we would like to implement it in our design lifecycle.
• Familiar with DFx and lean manufacturing concepts
• Define and develop system architectures and perform system analysis
• Define and develop system verification and validation test plans.
