Humanscale Design Studio is the creative force that drives Humanscale, the leading manufacturer of ergonomic products for the workplace. Our passion is designing products that combine uncompromising function and honest aesthetics with ultimate ease-of-use.
We seek an exceptional individual to join the engineering team as a Design Engineer III focusing on new product development for our seating line. The successful applicant must possess a background as a design engineer of consumer products, an analytical and creative mind, a willingness to work in a fast-paced production environment, and an outstanding work ethic.
Responsibilities
- Manage the development effort of multiple products simultaneously ensuring cost, schedule, and performance requirements are met.
- Work with Product Managers to define new product and project requirements
- Work with Operations function to drive designs into production.
- Lead brainstorm sessions with design and engineering teams
- Conceptualize mechanical solutions both alone and with the design team
- Manage the construction of prototypes
- Review, test, and draw conclusions from prototypes and samples
- Using CAD software, develop 3D models of parts and assemblies. Strong surface modelling skillset.
- Perform theoretical engineering analysis on prospective designs
- Develop engineering drawings (ASME Y14.5) that communicate applicable information for manufacturing and assembly
- Interface with manufacturers to define part manufacturability and acceptability
- Review off-tool samples and inspection reports while working to resolve manufacturing issues
- Interface with operations team to coordinate product launch
- Manage external engineering consulting resources
- Troubleshoot sustaining engineering/product issues
- Responsible for mentoring junior engineers and interns.
Qualifications
- Minimum 6 years experience as a design engineer in product development.
- Established record successfully developing products similar to those at Humanscale
- Ability to interpret product conceptions (sketched and 3D) from both 3rd party and in-house Industrial Designers, and work through program requirements in order to translate design into 3D manufacturable CAD.
- Strong troubleshooting abilities of quality and production issues.
- Exceptional understanding of mechanisms and mechanical systems
- Skilled using 3-D modeling software (Preference: Solidworks), including strong surface modeling capabilities.
- Designing mass production engineering parts using common manufacturing processes and materials.
- A strong understanding of design for plastic injection and die-cast of structural components.
- Skilled working with manufacturers to creating suitable engineering drawings to ASME Y14.5. Ability to perform in-depth tolerance studies using GDT call-outs.
- Ability to communicate technical information to nontechnical audiences through various media, including;
- Clear and concise language
- Drawing skills (GDT)
- Digital image manipulation
- Clear and professional emails
- Project Scheduling
- Test Plan Writing and test program management
- Ability to self-manage several engineering projects and take role of project engineer.
- Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution or equivalent work experience
- Ability to lift 60 pounds and work hands on with seating products.
- Must be able to do repetitive bending and stretching
- Skilled working directly with overseas vendors to solve manufacturing issues
- Ability to travel to international vendors (20%)
