Assistant Grounds & Equipment Manager

We are looking for a diligent and effective individual who is capable of interpreting and responding to the wintertime needs of a mountain resort environment. Someone who is passionate about keeping the care of those who enter the property as their highest concern and responding effectively by leading a team of 14 colleagues in snow removal and natural ice rink building. We are looking for a "green thumb" who understands the sensitivity of high altitude horticulture. Someone who is passionate about creating visual tapestries that adds to our guests "memorable experiences". Leading a team of 12 colleagues and working directly with the hotel's building superintendent, the successful candidate will be a motivator by nature and a leader by reputation. (Prioritize winter maintenance and rink building as primary responsibilities given the length of winter and our brief summer, for the sake of accuracy and the candidate's expectation of the position)

Summary of Responsibilities:

Assist Grounds manager in planning and designing attractive and environmentally friendly landscape projects for summer operations which demonstrate an understanding of alpine horticulture and balance with the impact of the department's wintertime snow clearing and event operation.
Prepared and capable of working in extreme weather and cold conditions (-40C) throughout winter season.
Assist Grounds manager in planning and coordinating the construction of natural rink surfaces totaling 90,000 square feet, an on ground curling rink, and the main structure of the hotel's ice bar.
Assist Grounds manager in planning, coordinate, and balance seasonal events (Ice Magic carving competition, Pond Hockey Tournament, other events as needed) with an understanding of their operational and environmental impact.
Effective planning and use of resources - expense management and budget controls
Colleague performance management, development - including selection and training
100 % accident free work place - with safety a proactive part of getting the job done
Exterior property facilities maintained allowing for Colleague and Guest safety - giving attention and having the foreknowledge of seasonal environmental dangers, including safety procedures for operating on natural ice rink surfaces, operation of heavy equipment through crowds, overhead roof hazard clearing.
Assist Grounds manager in developing strategy for winter removal of snow and ice, including work at height requirements and natural ice rink snow clearing safety.
Ensure compliance with the collective agreement and work with the CAW in establishing a working relationship
Maintenance and effective use of hotel grounds equipment and vehicles - proficiency and capable of training effective operators in a variety of heavy equipment (plow truck, skid steer, front end loader, etc.) in variable conditions and environments (ice rink surfaces, roads, pathways).
Contribute to hotel leadership team through networking, attendance at Leadership meetings and informal gatherings
Advertise and educate all Colleagues on grounds activities impacting the hotel
Assistance in the set up and removal of outdoor activities year round
Environmental practices to be an everyday part of how the Grounds Department works
Compliance with all safety regulations of assigned tasks, and ensure a clean and safe working environment with active participation in the hotel health and safety program.
Adhere to all environmental policies - interpreting and clearing wintertime hazards, performing lawn and garden care, while adhering to the strict environmental policies with the National Park system
Coordination with other departments of the hotels for the functions and other jobs as assigned
Assist Manager in developing and executing the effective plan for the equipment and vehicles under the usage of the department
Assist Manager arranging and coordinating maintenance and preventative maintenance for all vehicles and equipment under the usage of the department
Other reasonable duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Certificate or diploma in landscaping/horticulture required
Experience in maintenance and upkeep of vehicles and winter equipment
Experience in operations and maintenance of heavy equipment like loaders and bobcats
Proven communication skills and leadership ability
Previous supervisory experience required
Minimum five years landscape experience along with heavy equipment operation
Valid Alberta drivers license with recent abstract
Highly motivated, has proven initiative and is very responsible
