The 5G RF Engineer will provide contractor services for a Contiguous United States (CONUS) contract. This program will support the Air Force "5G - Next G" program to accelerate implementation of advanced wireless communications with applications in both the CONUS and Outside CONUS (OCONUS) regions. To further that mission, USAFWC wishes to engage in an experiment to allow for the disaggregation and mobilization of several of their operations centers to allow for greater efficiency and resilience/survivability.

Location & Travel: This RF/5G SME position can be based anywhere CONUS (preferably near Nellis AFB, NV) and will require remote/telework and travel to customer sites. Travel is expected to be 10-15 days-a-month (usually 1 week at a time and home on the weekends) and up to 70%. Travel will be reimbursed based on GSA Per Diem rates and DoD Joint Travel Regulations (JTR).

Security Clearance: This position must be a United States Citizen and hold a Top-Secret Clearance with SCI.

Responsibilities

  • Design, install and configure 5G hardware including antennas, cores, and Radio Access Networks (RAN).
  • Evaluate and research 5G networking hardware and software solutions to enhance existing network.
  • Accountable for leading field integration testing efforts of all 4G/5G key features with customers, including test plan development, reviewing test plan with customers, driving cross-functional teams to execution, review of test results, issue identification and analysis and quality proofing until software acceptance is achieved.
  • Produce documentation such as How-To-Guides, Research, Compare and Analysis, and diagrams as using MS Visio.
  • Perform Systems Analysis and Control activities while enabling the ability to measure progress, evaluate alternatives, and document decisions.
  • Provide requirements analysis and gathering technical details regarding a customer's environment.
  • Perform Protocol analysis using various network and RF analysis tools.
  • Deliver end-to-end systems engineering services to customers and possess expertise with the standard Systems Engineering Process "V": CONOPS, System Requirements, Requirements Verification and Traceability Matrix (RVTM), High-Level Design, Subsystem Requirements, Development & Implementation, Unit Test, Integration Test, System Verification and System Validation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in an Information Technology or related field OR 5+ years' experience in supporting enterprise or customer facing systems in a DoD environment.
  • 3+ years' experience in 5G RAN RF protocols, 3GPP standards, physical layer, protocol stack and procedures, software-defined radio access networks. Demonstrated research and problem-solving skills via prior work experience. Knowledge of emerging technologies within mobile communications space. Experience with wireless infrastructure provider and/or operator is desired. Experience investigating and troubleshooting cellular device performance issues. Solid understanding all technical problems in LTE, RF fundamentals and data network protocols.
  • 5+ years' experience and knowledge of networking services, routing & switching, protocols & technologies (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, OSPF, BPG, etc.) and strong network engineering background in a TCP/IP MPLS WAN environment. Experience with configuration of networking devices such as wireless AP, L2/L3 switches, router, and Next Generation Firewalls (Cisco, ASA), IDS/IPS (Cisco Fire Power/Source File) and associated management tools.
  • Must have 4G/5G Call Processing experience within depth knowledge of RRC, S1-MME, S1-U and X2 protocols and understanding of concepts such as Hybrid Beamforming, Massive MIMO, New Waveforms, LTE-NR interworking & co-existence, 5G Numerologies etc.
  • Relevant hands-on experience with multiple vendor technologies, including Dell, Juniper, Aruba, Palo Alto, Cisco firewalls, IDS, and DMZs, OR three years of specialized experience in a converged network environment, with top level support and customer service skills.
  • Ability to physically install and interconnect IT equipment, such as RF antennas and other communications hardware on tactical vehicles and in mobile deployment environments.
  • DoD 8570 - IAT Level II certification (e.g.: Security+ CE) required.
  • Cisco CCNP or similar Professional Certification preferred.
