Title: Community Developer

Reports To: Director of Community Development

FLSA Status: Exempt

Location: Sullivan Solar Power, Riverside Branch


Job Description:

The Community Developer will cultivate Marketing and Communications efforts of Sullivan Solar Power to promote the firm’s services. The CDA coordinates Sullivan Solar Power’s market research, marketing strategy, advertising, promotions and public relations activities. We are currently seeking a CDA in the Riverside and LA/OC areas.


  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, government officials,  media representatives, businesses and organizations and use these relationships to develop new business opportunities
  • Manage targeted Community Development programs and marketing campaigns
  • Research and analyze community-specific demographics and statistical data
  • Production of presentations, advertisements, merchandise, marketing and collateral materials
  • Research and manage communication mediums used by Sullivan Solar Power—i.e. radio, direct mail, newspapers, magazines, the Internet, outdoor signs—that will disseminate advertising
  • Coordinate media buys and reserve advertising space with appropriate media outlets
  • Build contact lists for media outlets, direct mail and email marketing campaigns
  • Production, delivery, distribution and payment of marketing and direct mail pieces
  • Create social media platforms and manage their content
  • Develop and manage web site content for community campaign sites
  • Write interesting and effective press releases
  • Plan and coordinate media, community and special events
  • Purchase marketing merchandise and maintain inventory; coordinate use of event display materials
  • Develop and maintain the company's corporate image and identity, which includes the use of logos and signage
  • Nominate Sullivan Solar Power and company executive for awards and recognition
  • Maintain company memberships and listings
  • Write content and create company newsletter
  • Create and manage email marketing campaigns
  • Work long hours; nights and weekends are common
  • Stay within strict budget parameters
  • Evaluate community programs, advertising and public relations efforts to draw conclusions and improve successful results


  • Strong computer knowledge and typing skills
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat and Email Marketing with an ability to navigate on a daily basis
  • Knowledge of database tools with the ability to quickly create, modify, and analyze spreadsheets
  • Creative design skills with proficiency in Photoshop, InDesign and/or other similar design programs is helpful
  • Capable of conducting thorough internet research quickly
  • Working knowledge of email marketing and social media platforms
  • Competence in running internet advertising campaigns
  • Knowledge of all advertising mediums and costs associated with them
  • Media buying and negotiating deals
  • Production and printing of publications and promotional materials in an effective and appropriate manner
  • Impeccable attention to detail
  • Willingness to conduct cold calls
  • Ability to implement and evaluate public relations and marketing goals
  • Knowledge of public relations, advertising, marketing and communications principles
  • Outstanding writing skills with strong knowledge of AP Style Guidelines
  • Write, edit and proof copy for publications, broadcast, and other media outlets
  • Exceptional interpersonal communication abilities to establish and maintain effective relationships with stakeholders
  • Ability to be persuasive, both orally and in writing, with media, customers, potential clients, government officials and other publics
  • Comfortable with leading management role and oversee others while maintaining a heavy personal workload
  • Event coordination
  • Must be capable of working under pressure and flexible to meet deadlines and goals
  • Time and task management: establish priorities; organize and handle a variety of projects simultaneously
  • Productive while working independently
  • Ability to create and stay within budgets
  •  Familiarity with local government inner-workings and structures
  • Knowledge of solar power technology basics, rebates and incentives
  • Personal qualities desired for the position: mature, creative, highly motivated, resistant to stress, flexible, and decisive leader

Education & Training:

A bachelor's degree in Communications or similar field. Courses in business law, management, marketing, advertising, journalism, economics, accounting, finance, and statistics. Job experience and/or completion of an internship is preferred.

Background curriculum or experience in advertising, business administration, public affairs, public speaking, direct marketing, renewable energy, sustainability, political science and creative and technical writing are ideal.


The ideal candidate lives in the Riverside area and is willing to commute to corporate headquarters in San Diego, CA for 3-month training period. 


·         Valid driver's license and clean driving record required

·         Must be able to pass a background check and drug test


Compensation and Benefits:

  • Compensation is comprised of an base salary dependent on experience and commission
  • Health and Dental Benefits: Employees are eligible to participate in 100% employer paid health and dental insurance coverage after 90-days of employment
  • Time Off: After 365 days of employment, employees are entitled to five business days off paid for vacation time, and an additional five business days off paid for sick time.

·         Retirement: Employees are eligible to participate in our 401k employer match plan after 90-days of employment
